Fucking Pissed-gym story

New member
Excuse me while I rant a litle here. I lift at one of those gyms that is a franchise, so i'm able to go to different locations. Today I went to a new one. When I lift I like to put on my walkman and not to be interupted until I'm finished. In between sets some jerfoff comes up to me a taps me on my shoulder. I'm already pissed because I have to stop my walkman and listen to this moron. He tells me that he is the owner here and he, "doesn't know what the rules at the other gym are, but you can't be slamming the weights on the ground here." I ask him "what the fuck am I suppose to do" and he tells me "not to get an attitude." I tell him "I don't need some asshole telling me how to lift." Obviously after I said that I was removed from the gym and told not to come back. WTF I'm doing heavy Db presses with strict form, but when I'm done with my last rep I'm absolutely spent so I drop the weight down in front of me. Am I suppose to not train as hard as I can so I don't damage the floor?? Fuck that!! Sorry about the crying just thought I'd share the story with you guys.

I don't think I could be at that gym... I don't have a training partener so when one trains to failure with dumbbells it's either ATTEMPT to control the weights back down to your legs or let the weights hit the floor... Sounds like you were at a shitty gym

Although I'm pretty sure you could've avoided being tossed from the gym by not swearing at the guy and simply telling him what you were doing...

YUM

A lot of gyms, both harcore and franchise have those types of rules. Dropping the weight damages the floor, benches, and the weights themselves. Just the other day I had to use a 110 lb bell that was damaged and wobbly because of repeated dropping on the floor. At $2 per pound for replacement, you can see why owners wouldn't want you dropping them. This doesn't even take into account the annoyance factor to those around you. Presses you can drop to your knees after your last rep, or you can get a spotter to help you so that you don't have to drop them. Not breakin on you -- I used to drop weights too -- just offering an alternate point of view.

I can understand the need for dropping when you are going all out heavy, pushing your body to it's limits, and instead of holding back that one last rep, you go for it. Leaving you spent, and unable to lower the weight controlled. This is what you describe, and hey, you have no choice.

Now on the other hand, one thing that I hate more than anything, is the 150lb 17 year old abdoer who is doing flyes with 10lb weights, screams each rep (from the start!), does about 20-30 of them, them drops the weight with a loud scream so everybody will notice his accomplishment!

So, I have to wonder, why do gyms bother the bro's who go in and take it seriously, while those abdoer pricks can drop weight, make noise, cause trouble and never restack weights? I think thats why I joined my current gym. End of problem for me :D Maybe time for you to do the same!

I don't care for dudes who throw weights around and drop the dumbbells every chance they get. To me it looks like the person has an attitude problem and can make people around them uncomfortable. I train heavy and hard but I NEVER throw the weights around..it's so meathead like and what gives bodybuilders a bad name.

Hey tzan, its not a golds gym by any chance is it? Last summer me and my friend were doing dumbells, 125's, and this prick that worked there told us not to drop the weights. ON the next set we obviously had to drop the weights again so the little snitch told the owner, who's a bitch anyway and had our memberships revoked. Lets see those @#$%#!@& yuppies try and press 125lb dumbells and then place them down lightly. @#$% them!!!!!!!!! I feel your rage bro.

I used to work out at a popular franchise gym in Texas where you couldn't even click the weights at the top. If you even clicked them accidentally, they would come over and warn you. BamBam

When you're done repping out a set of the 150's for 10 and you're tired as shit there's no way you're going to place them gently back on the rack. They're getting dropped. I did this at my gym and these two chumps started whispering "thats why all the dumbells are bent....I'm going to tell the manager." I asked them " DO you use the 150's .....then shut up!" Luckily I work at my gym too, so I don't get in trouble for crap like that.

Not to mention when you do chest the day after you shot 750 mg sust in your ass. It's bad enough sitting on the bench, nevermind rolling back and forth with the weights to put then on your knees.
It's also one thing to be concious of how you drop them, if you drop them flat and controlled they won't bend or make alot of noise..... if you just blindly toss them thats idiotic

I guarantee the people who work at that gym thought you were having some "roid rage" as it's often called. No wonder they kicked you out. If they don't know anything about gear, but suspect that, with your size and your propensity to start cursing after one statement, that you are experiencing roid rage, I suspect they would kick you out faster than you can say "quit staring at me."

I am not a badass by any means but I do not like the weights to be dropped to the floor. It is true that they do get bent and at that point they are almost impossible to balance correctly if they are held wrong. I have been working out for years and have seen the newbies slam the 100+'s on the ground after doing a half rep or two. If you cannot handle the weight, don't pick em up. You need to learn how to get out of that bad habbit cus it just fucks things up. It does not take any extra effort to lower the DB's to your knees so maybe you should learn how. Its just like when you started lifting, start with the lighter weights, then work your way up. By the way, I think its your attitude that got you thrown out of that gym anyways, so go take some Nub, and relax, the world was not built around you my friend.

It's not that hard to drop the weights to your knees then sit up. I agree it is pretty pussy for guys to be ratting eachother out for dropping the weights though. It happens once in awhile. I'm just not a fan of dropping them every time -- or even a majority of the time. If it's because you actually went to failure, you can't control that. If it's cuz you're too lazy to guide them to your knees after your last rep (or you want the attention, or whatever), then that's pretty ridiculous.

Flat bench is probably the hardest to avoid dropping them. But it can be done. There's not many other exercises that you would have an excuse to drop the weights.

the only time i feel the need to drop the dumbells is on the flat bench..when i have140's and i'm doing 12 reps there is now way i have energy to jsut set them down gently..

i told my friend same thing when he was droping the weights, if cant handle putting weights back correctly then dont use it. i meen he would use 110 for 8 reps then just throw it down, and new dumbells would get bend, then wtf im suppose to use fuked up dumbells , no way. i juse 140 for reps too and at the end i never throw them u can still put them down gently. now if u were just clicking dumbells to each otehr a little now thats a diff story i would tell the owner to fuk off, or just give him attitude so i wont get thrown out, but come on dude, think of other people who have to use dumbells after u, or when u gonna come back next day and use same dumbells again u dont wanna use fuked up weights do u .

LOL ...shreded ..bro... are you talkin about me...that time......lol i bent the dumbel in ballys on my guest day in your gym.....:D hehe i think so:) Sorry bro....next time ill try to gently put it down... it sjsut so hard though.....you know im feeding my cows now..lol and cutting so my cows are pumped...... and nervous......i wonder what would happen if someone told me im droping weight stoo fast now.....hmmm my cows might bite them...... Got MILK????:D

Sometimes I have to drop DBs when I'm doing DB shrugs. Not because my traps are tired but because my grip fails. I at least try to bend my knees a bit just as I'm about to let go. It's true that the heavy DBs at my gym are for the most part bent because of abuse and it sucks. Somebody should invent a better floor mat than the 30-year-old rubber matting. That would probably be the best solution. Or have special raised pads to put in place next to you when you expect to be dropping the weights. That would be cool. If you get cuaght not using those when you drop weights, then you're out.

my 2cents,

JC

that sucks!

one day the gym manager came up to me and asked me not to drop the weights on the floor. thing is, i WASN'T dropping them, someone else was. she couldnt even see who was dropping them but yet she came up to me AND ONLY ME. i told her "i've been working out here for 8 years and you've never seen me drop or slam weights! it's not even me who's doing it! DON'T ASSUME IT'S ME just because i'm bigger than everyone else in here! NOW GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY FACE BEFORE I EAT YOU!"

she walked away and came back with a free smoothie for me ;)

This is the key - make an effort and by concious but do not hurt yourself in the process.

Shit happens from time to time but, I think just dropping the weights from shoulder level on incline is not due to muscle failure. A controlled drop is on thing but, just saying fuck it and letting go is another. I can't stand when people do that however I would never bust anyones balls about it or go running to the manager. That's just plain ole being a bitch. To each his own.

All gyms could solve this by having rubber matts on the floor in all free weight areas.

Our gyms do have rubber mats, but the 110+ bells still get fucked up if they hit the wrong way time after time. Plus, those things bounce off of rubber -- watch your feet...

Have none of you considered the safety of the other people in your gym? I bet you'd feel like shit if some hot chick was walking by and your weight crushed her foot because you were too big of a pansy to properly handle your weight. nevermind the fact that she'd probably sue your ass off and own you for the rest of your life.

Just my nickel. Keep the change.

Very true, someone needs to develop a better rubber matting material. Any chemistry Phds on this board?

Now since it's later in the day and I've had time to simmer down, I realize that my attitude towards the owner was deffiantly a little shitty. Thats the way I am though, deffiantly a weakness. Sometimes I need to just shut up and nod my head. As far as acting like an idiot with the weights though I can assure you I don't carelessly slam the weights down. On my last rep on heavy presses it's impossible to gently put the weights down if your going to ABSOLUTE failure. Anybody who say different is not going to failure.

"Drop" is a relative term. It all depends how high up you are. I "drop" the weights from a few inches. If I am doing flat dumbell I might drop the weight 10-12 inches.

But I see some guys do shoulder presses with dumbells and literally drop the weight from shoulder height. The dumbells are bent and tough to balance now.

This is unacceptable. Being a gym owner can be a tough business. And replacing dumbells constantly is not an option.

I feel for you and I don't know what his tone was when he first spoke to you..but I have learned to always be courteous at first.

"To be nice until its time NOT TO BE NICE"

You guys have to realize what gyms are about these days. They are not there so you can have a good workout. They are there hoping for as many "new years resolution = get fit so buy 10 year membership and go for a few weeks and thats it" customers as possible!

Though I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that gym owners ACTIVELY recruit people that they think will not make full use of their memberships, it is true that that is part of the financial calculations that go into figuring out how many members a given gym can support. It's the same for any kind of membership--AAA, season passes to theme parks, anything where you pay a flat fee for unlimited usage of a facility.

I would like to think that gym owners get into the business because they have a genuine interest in fitness, and would like to see all of their members make progress toward their fitness goals.

My gym is the hardcore gym of the city, the place where the dark siders train. And STILL, the gym owner insists on every hour getting on the microphone tellign people not to drop weights and put plates away. Signs on the mirrors too telling you that if you drop weights you will lose your membership. I am actually good about it but geez...

I've yelled at dudes from across the gym for dropping dumbells because I'm fucking tired of doing heavy military presses when one of them is bent to hell and keeps rolling out of my grip. Unless you are at complete failure, or you feel an injury, there's no reason at all to drop the goddamn weights from anymore than a foot or two at the most. I train hard, and when I can't do my lifts because the dumbells are so fucked up from some retard unable to control his set, I get pretty pissed. If you can't control your damn weight use the little pink ones until you can.

Bent Dumbbells

Hey it looks like bent dumbbells are a problem for a lot of us. So here's a tip to help you hold those bent DBs: look at how it's bent and roll it or turn it so that the handle part is arching up (like how it would be if you picked it up and the ends were drooping because they're so heavy). Grab the DB so that it is in this orientation while you are doing the lift. This way the axis of gravity will be the same as if the DB weren't bent and it won't roll out of your grip.

Just a temporary solution until the gym buys new DBs (yeah right like that'll ever happen)
