Fruits as post workout carbs

i usually take in about 80 grams immediately after my workout and then another 80 or so 1 and a half hours later. I am of the understanding that simple sugars are best right after the workout and then something more complex later.

I recently have been having fruit post workout like a banana with fruit juice (30 grams from the banana and around 50 from the juice)......can these carbs from the banana or any other fruit for that matter be considered as a good choice post workout???

Dextrose is better for the simple fact, that the muscles can synthesize it to muscle glycogen, muscles do not have the enzymes required to synthesize fructose as glycogen, so the liver does, and once liver glycogen is full...
well you will start converting it to fat... plus you probably want to replenish the muscle glycogen post workout..

fruits in general are not optimal, though they do taste good :)

most vegetables are more so 'optimal' as a way to reap benefits of vitamins and minerals that fruit contain...

Dextrose and/or Maltodrexin (sp?) is the best post-workout since it will spike your insulin quicker than fructose (juices). Cortisol starts to build up quickly in your system from a workout. It can start breaking down the muscle, rather than building it. So, by drinking Dextrose you can have an insulin spike and this will replenish your muscles and basically delete the cortisol process.

thank you all......i would prefer having dextrose as well i was just looking into options that did not include spending money on supplements.:D

any more info is appreciated.

Thanks

Buy some Gatorade mix at the Barn or wherever. It's cheap, tastes good and is economical. Aaaaaaahhhhh yyeeeeaaaaahhhhh.

actually I thought gatorade has fructose and sucrose in it. Which would be like eating grape juice with sugar in it.

Powerade has some maltodextrin in it but also has high fructose corn syrup.

Dextrose only costs about 2 dollars per pound. I bought an 11 pound bucket the other day, for 10 dollars.

You could eat some 'shock tarts', they are made with dextrose.

Simple sugars are the way to go post workout. You need to replace your glycogen storage and fruits work very well. I often eat an apple in the middle of my leg work out just to get through it.

BigAragorn,

THis is where you are wrong bro. People have to get something straight here so that they wont get raped! DO NOT buy dextrose from a supplement shop. Many are starting to sell this now as a "nutritional supplement" and are jacking the price up. Have you every heard of someone jacking the price up of sugar? Do not be fooled by this. DO NOT buy your dextrose from pre-mix gatorade. This is good, but still expensive.

Dextrose = Corn sugar. Go to any local Wine Kitz store and and wine selling accessories store, and you can literally buy pounds of this stuff for dollars. It is cheap. Mix it with some kool-aid packets for flavoring. That is all you need. This is one of the cheapest supplements you can buy.
