try using the smith machine (<--that would be bad advice)

he speaketh the truth, look at this vid of pyrros dimas of greece at about 3:30 into it. oly lifters live and die by front squats. u will definitely need to start with a lower weight, but the results will be worth it in the long run.
 
Honestly, it takes practice with lower weights to get your "center" correct. Work up slowly, when i advanced too quickly I had instability issues. One day you'll just "get it."

What do you think I should be doing? And what % less do you do than normal??
 
If holding the bar is a problem try using straps to keep it in place. I did this when I first started and after a few weeks was able to do without. As java said, getting control is the first step.

The same thing I tell experienced lifters who try to learn the clean. Start with one wheel and make sure form is 100% and then use progressive resistance. I started with 185 and was back squatting 500+ for my workouts. It's an ego buster.
