Be sure to get the current updates, too.

There are infectors out there than neither of those programs will touch, unfortunately. When that happens, there are volunteer sites that will walk you through a manual cleanup process that begins by running a free program called "Hijack THIS!" They can fix damn near anything if you follow their instructions.

Don't be fooled by sites that charge for this -- the ones I'm talking about are free and all they ask in return is that you don't waste their time.

Here's a real good example of what some folks have to go through to get clean -- the part that gets me is how this guy fixes one thing and keeps saying "So it's okay now, right?" He sounds like someone who's been told he has drug-resistant TB but he figures "it's nothing serious."

The experts tell him upload another log and they find six more infections on the guy's machine. Repeat that process about four times.

Spybot is very good.
Unfortunately not quite good enough. Spybot will sit and spin its wheels on some of the "rootkit" variations, the ones that hook in at a low level.

Our dear friends at Microsoft came up with a way to lock certain directories so they couldn't be deleted by accident. The ONE directory Microsoft protects this way by default? Their fucking game directory MSN Gaming Zone! "Oh, you mustn't delete THAT! It's too important!" Meanwhile the trojans stuff themselves into the backup store, so if you do a "restore to previous config" you re-infect yourself. Bastards.

Thanks for the info.
