You put the files from one of those websites onto a 3.5 floppy disk.
You put that floppy into the computer and then turn on the computer.
You should get a dos prompt if not you will need to go into your BIOS setttings and make sure that the A: drive is the first disk your computer looks to in the boot sequence.
When I say format a disk that includes your hard disk or hard drive or your computer as a whole.
So when you want to run a format make sure you are at your c: prompt and then issue the format commands.

Or is this where you get the windows message?

[dell sucks]

Ok..wont make you guys nuts with this, just want to make sure........I download the scandisk from the website, then I reboot from the DOS prompt.........when I get the prompt, whats my next move?

in DOS, type fdisk
press enter. It'll give you a bunch of warnings, hit ok, partition your hard drive if you want to and install 98.

Thanks bro....do I still need the disk from scandisk.com? The download? Or can I just do that from the prompt?

I never used a disk or down load, just the fdisk from dos.
I had to format my computer many times, going from win ME, to win 2k. Yours should be pretty easy since your only going from 95 to 98. I had problems getting hardware (modem, CD) to work with the new OS.
And after formating, you'll run like new.

Nice..so just get to the DOS prompt and type fdisk, right?

doesnt matter what the prompt reads?
The prompt will probably be C:> or some such. I'm not a dos master. :D
Just type fdisk, and it will bring up many comformation screens. You may get a little confused with some of them, I did a little, just because I wanted to partition the hard drive though.

aight.....so when Im confused I just say OK to everything? Nothing else needs to be done?
basicly. It's been a few years since I've done it. Look you are reformating anyway, completely erasing everything on the hd. It's not like you can screw it up.
