For the Army/Marine guys. A couple of questions.

Yes, more military threads from me. Get over it.

Okay, I want to hear from the infantry guys. Since I'm now considering this as a career, I want to know as much as possible.

What is a normal day like for you? I mean, from what I understand, your whole life is devoted to being ready to fight a ground conflict. Do you just train all day every day? Sometimes on the range, sometimes hiking in full gear on simulated missions, just gym and running time? What? I seriously have no idea what you do all day when you're not deployed.

That brings up another question. During normal peace times, how much time is spent at your home base and how much is spent deployed. If I was an Infantry Officer, should I expect to be gone 1 month every year? 2 months? 6 months?

Also, what kind of internet connection can I expect to have out in the field. T1 line? Maybe a cable modem? I won't join unless I can access the internet 5 days a week. :D

dude.. do you honestly like war that much? do you like sleeping in the field? do you like no showers and cammie paint? do you like poopin in a hole? do you like having to work with some of the most ignorant people on the planet (some.. i said.. don't be getting torqued off buck or other grunts.. but y'all gotta admit there are some DUMB mofos in the marines).. do you like not being able to have an intelligent conversation, about anything other than field gear, cammie paint, war tactics, m-203's, etc that is? do you enjoy hearing people talk like they have a frog in their throat every second of every day? hearing hoo-rah instead of yes?

if you don't........................think of something else to do..

don't get me wrong.. lookin back on it.. i'm glad i did it.. i'm glad i went through what i did.. i'm glad i met the people i did.. i have a shit ton of stories to tell..

before i say what i'm about to say.. let me say this - don't go thinkin i didn't serve with pride either.. i never bitched one time while i was in.. i always carried myself with military bearing... i lived for the military.. i hated the military.. but at the same time i had enough pride to be the best at what i did.. i advanced in rate twice as fast as my peers.. etc etc... in other words.. i was far from being a shit bag..

but while i was with the grunts (granted.. i was enlisted.. so it'll be a little better for ya if you're wearing something silver or gold on your collar)... i FUCKING HATED it.. i really did..

protect your knees :bawling:

That is my #1 concern. I'm 28 (going to be 29 real soon). My knees aren't what they use to be. I'd hate to destroy them by constantly going out in the field for pointless repetitive exercises. I know field work and all that is required, just not to what degree.

You know anything about Armored Cav?

Decem - Well, to tell you the truth, it does kinda appeal to me. For the past 3 years, I've flown a fucking desk and it's torture. And there has always been that part of me that wonders if I have what it takes. I hate to sound like I'm bragging, but I am a very smart individual. I just have attention problems. I always have. Sitting behind a desk writing code is torture for me.

Well

depend what you do, but number 1 grunts killer is the knees
so be carefull about that. Depend what you want to do also.

As for Cav, I am not really a cavalry lover or armored lover too.

My dad a wise man, once told me this.

" Son if you are stupid enought one day to join the army, please dont be a tanker" WHY DAD? he replied " Ever heard of anti tank missiles and go read about it" After I changed my mind LOL.

But in any case depend of what you wanna do, and what kind of background you have.

HERE my advice!

You said you want to know if you have what it takes

Well dont heistate, just do it and do whatever you want to do period.

If you want to spend your carreer digging foxholes and shit go right ahead. I'm an infantry man 11BangBang and I'm with an ANG SF unit now. Everybody calls 11BangBang pop-up targets. No thanks, that charge call doesn't work for me. I prefer to surgically remove the opposition. Face it, and this is coming form a former 11BangBang, infantry is either a stepping stone to the higher forms of Combat Art or it's a level that people that are not very smart stay at esp the drafties. If the draft comes they go to infantry then you have to work next to an asshole with an attitude that could get you killed. No thanks. If you go infantry just use it as a stepping stone to Rangers or SF.

Oh, and if you seen as many infantry as I have, they look old before their time. It's called 'Hardening'. It's necessary but it fucks your body up.

The reason I'm interested in infantry is because of the Rangers. There aren't many other career fields that you can be in and move on to Ranger training.

But again, I'd hate to ruin my knees and have the Army kick me out.

Rangers = Hard on the knee

any kinds of units with any types of airborne activities will be hard on your knee.

Do you like explosive?

and what kind of background you have?

Explosives. Now we're talking. :D

My background.

4 years enlisted Air Force as a cargo electrician.
3.5 years as software technician/engineer.
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology

My background.

I forgot to mention. I grew up shooting fully auto guns as well as pistols and rifles. Mac 11, MP5 (silenced and unsilenced), Thompson, AK 47 (converted to shoot 22s, fun gun). I'm a damn good shot and can fuck some shit up with a consistent 3 round burst. I might be a bit rusty, but it'll all come back.

After spending six years in the Marines as a grunt I can't help but feel like an authority on the subject. During Desert Storm I lived in a hole in the ground for six months. Of course every three days or so you changed positions and got to dig you a new home. I got a shower about once a month, maybe. There are NO internet connections in the field. If you can't hump it you don't have it.

If you do go to the USMC as a grunt you will be deployed on ship for 6 months at a time. Expect this every two years. Ship life sucks, there is no other way to put it. Especially since the Phillipines have closed. You could go out with $20 in your pocket and eat the biggest meal in town, drink till you couldn't stand up, buy a whore for the night and still have money left over the next morning.

Everytime some asshole in the world decides to start shit pack your bags you will soon be on your way to his country. To visit for a while. If you have a family get ready to not see them at the holidays. I used serve under a Major who got out because in two years time he was gone for twenty months. And let's not forget that the pay sucks. I could on forever about the pros and cons But if I had to do it over I would in a second without hesitation!
If you have any specific questions feel free to email or pm me. good luck

In the infantry there is no such thing as peace time. You will more than likely see combat often during your career, not like a full on open war, but there are always shit holes to go fight in. If you really want to fight in the infantry go Marines. It's the only way to kill.

Combat Engineers build bridges, play with bombs and blow shit up all day long. They get deployed a lot as well. They are like the infantry wanna be's.

Let's look at what he said closely.... he is worried about his knees. Forget the Infantry, Rangers, SF, etc. Want to try your knees out for good measure? Strap on a 55lb Ruck and walk/run for 12 miles in under 3 hours. Now you'll get the idea. People in the Combat Arts are hardened, it's rough. Oh BTW, the 55lb Ruck is only for Army standard Testing, don't think it will EVER be that light on mission! muahahahahahahaha! If you are the Communications Specialist on an SF 'A' Team, you'll jump out of a plane with a 112lb Ruck and move through the swamps and Musque Egg in Alaska that could have snapped your legs off at the knees when you landed there.

Good information from everyone. I know it won't be a walk in the park. But in a sick sort of way, that's why it interests me. I do worry about my knees. I'd hate to be a liability because of my knees in combat. I wouldn't want to endanger anyone because of my weaknesses. I think my knees are as strong as anyone's at this point, but you never know.

I'd considered the 55 pound ruck sack/12 mile hike deal. Both as a test of myself and as a way to get in proper shape. I'll go try to bum one off my Army buddy and load it up with water and rocks. That should also be a good gauge of my knee strength.

Combat Engineer sounds pretty cool too, even if they seem to be looked down upon by the infanty (Buck :doublefi: )

Like I said do a GH cycle before :).

With your qualification, there more things you can do. I am in trade, a infantry officer
( please PM me I'll tell you some nice stories of some peoples ) my BA is in Political Science.
With that degree I had three choices, Infantry, Intel or Services.

With the BA in that field it helped in some aspect
- logistic
- more diplomatic ( especially face to face with a serb ass***)
- plus with the specialities it helped the understanding of wars more easilly, something my boys under me liked alot.

right now I am in a different unit and my BA help me a dam lot, I specialized in terror
with the grad work, and in my field it is a complete must.

As an officer during my garrison normal infantry day, it was 60% desk job,
40%field

now it is 80% field, 20% desk
and a whole different ball park.

But for you, with your qualies, there better thing to do than the infantry.

anyway if jogging the Jolly Ranger way is for you, then go for it.

I have no regrets at all.

3Vandoo - thanks for the info. My main focus is to avoid the tedium I face in my current job. Stick me in services and I'll go postal.

I have ruled out Armored Cav. Someone (I don't feel like going back and finding out who) made a good point and tanks.

Infantry won't be my first choice but it will be on the preference sheet.

Combat Engineer is a possibility depending on what else I find out about it.

I doubt I'd be very good at diplomacy so I'm not sure Intel is the way to go. Plus, that sounds like a lot of desk work, which I'm trying to get away from.

I'm still interested in being a helicopter maintenance officer, but I don't want to get stuck running some fucking motor pool full of jeeps and GOV POS's.

I'll give you a good piece of advice....Becoming a Ranger, and earning that beret is not to hard....staying a Ranger day in and day out is a different ballgame...

The normal hours are start to finish, there is no in between, travel light...freeze at night is very real. Sore knee's, ankles and lower back is a constant reminder of your chosen path, and will haunt you the rest of your life....

If I had it to do all over again....Yup, I'd still choose the Ranger lifestyle. I have good memories, and bad...The good outweigh the bad.....

If you go infantry, go elite....other than that choose a carrer field such as medical, dental, air traffic controller...etc. Something that will earn you alot of money in the outside world....

Just a few thoughts for you Bro.....

Ranger

In most types of officer job they will be alot of desk job :bawling:

If you want to go infantry just do it ( this was sponsorized by the new issued Nike)
LOL

Infantry will be the job with the most physical aspect of it, but I do call it soldiering.

Like I said to the Captain that did my interview a long time ago, he asked me
why I chosen the infantry, over different job.

I said: Sorry sir, but the only job interesting in the AF is be a pilot and I dont have the eyes andf neither I can get in a cockpit.

2- The navy, they are too queer for me, and be six months at sea is not for me

the other trades is the army never interested me because infantry for me sir, is the only real
soldier we can possibly find.

If I was worried about money on the outside, I'd stay with what I do now. Software Engineer. But that's not what is driving me. There's something gnawing at me. Something telling me I have to find out if I really do have what it takes. but I don't take my life or my duty lightly.

3Vandoo - So you're an Infantry Officer. What do you do all day? What is your typical routine? What are your daily as well as overall responsibilities? How much time do you spend deployed?

fuck off seem you think like a regular guy eh.

:)

I hope you know I was just fucking around. :D

I don't want to join the Reserves because I already know I want the military as a full time career and at this point, it's just a matter of finding the best job for me. I don't want to ever think I chose a job because it was the easiest thing. Considering the Infantry is about facing my greatest fears. I don't want to think I backed down because it might be too hard.
