I have heard that plasmas go bad quickly and that LCD (is that right?) are better. ??? I've only had traditional TV's before but I need a very small flat TV that will stand up to temperature variations and humidity. Also, what about HDTV? Does it present a benefit if you don't use a HD VCR? Vice versa? I can't put cable to this tv, but could get satellite, maybe. How about HDTV with satellite?

Any rec's for really good deals/value/quality?

Where's alien amp.. when we need him!!!

PM him.. I haven't had a prob with Plasma at all for years, I have SKY plus on it, Spanish tv and the rest..

I'll have a look at some sites and let you know.. ;)

What was the question?

The main things you should consider when buying is 1. What kind of room lighting do you have and 2. What will you mainly be using it for.

Temperature variations? Is this tv for the boat or something? Give me more info.

My SO and I don't play xBox. ;-)

What about for DVD's? Make much difference. Do I need the HD DVD player. If not, why the hell do they make those?

Nah I haven't played xbox much during the summer - been too busy.

Now that winter is almost here I will be playing a lot. Plus playing Oblivion a lot now that I have time to sit down and play.

Man that game is addicting.

I didn't want to get into specifics b/c I don't want to draw the crazies into this thread. You know what I mean?

I will mainly be using it to watch movies at night time. Maybe we will get satellite TV one day, but it is not really high on our list of priorities right now because of the expense and because we are not big TV watchers anyway. The lighting will always be dark because during the day, I don't foresee it ever being used. It will be on a boat, in the master bedroom, close to a hatch. Sometimes we don't keep the AC on in there when it is on the dock all week, so it can get very hot/humid in there. We have a regular small TV in there now and haven't had any problems yet with that one, but we want to upgrade to flat to save space.

plasma still have the burn in effect regadless so what they say... dlp still get the rainbow effect and screen door.. Sony sxrd 2006 rear projection tvs are awsome no rainbow effect nothing black are amazing and colors so vibrant. They are have hdmi imputs at 1080 p now. There native reslotion is 1920 by 1080 i. You can hook you pc up to they and use it as a monitor as i do its fucking sweet. And if you had a good enough video card you can set it at 1920 by 1080 i. They have a 50 55 60 inche sxrd those tvs rock and awsome price. Check them out cant go wrong there at all. Also check out the bravio series lcds xb2 those are killer with the floating glass front look amazing!!

Well considering space is probably precious on a boat I would go with either Plasma or LCD flat tv.

Personally from your situation an LCD is the way to go, but do not skimp on price. Buy a quality name brand because the cheaper ones tend to develop "dead pixels" easily. You may receive a dead pixel over time in random places which is not noticeable....it's only noticeable when you have a cluster of them. Also make sure you get one with a nice picture quality. They do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so choose wisely.

Plasamas would be okay too but they give off a lot of heat plus require a lot of energy to run, so may not be the best choise for a boat.

OH! great advice. This will run on generator power while at sea. I had forgotten to factor that in. You thought of everything. K to you!

\the you would be okay for a boat if a 46 inche would fit just need special surge power supply

Thanks heather girl! Love your pics in the pictures of members forum.. :qt:

I have a projection LCD by Sony and I like it. I'm not the tech guy though. It was an impulse buy when I was at Costco once. A friend of mine got a huge DLP and it looks great. It's kind of thick though. I forget which brand it is, but I think he paid around $4K for it.

I got mine for close to $6K and it now sells for close to $4K. Damnit.

That's a lot of money for a tv. What size? is it 1080p?

That is sweet

I can't afford it though so I will come over and watch yours. You like butter on your popcorn?

All I ever watch is CNN and football. I may sell it to a friend and buy a smaller one.

Thank you for the recommendations. I went to the store yesterday and looked at several. THis is embarrassing, but I had no idea how EXPENSIVE they were. I didn't get one because I was only expecting to pay around $500 for a little 23" or smaller. I know, I'm out of touch. :worried: The one I want is $800 so I will save up the amount that I allot myself to spend each week to buy it next week maybe.

They are very cool though.

I ended up really liking the LCD better than the plasma, because the plasmas had so much glare on them unless you get it completely dark in the room, you can see the reflection of the room in the TV.

6k for a TV? Holy cow! The nicest one that they had was $3k. I may get one of those one day for the living room, but I tend to feel my pockets tighten up when I see price tags like that for a TV. lol.

This is my newest tv.

Hitachi 55" wide RP LCD.
The only bad thing is that it handles everything except 1080p, but since I am not going to buy the Bluray/HD-DVD stuff it really doesn't effect me.

It was a $3000 tv when it came out. I waited until the new models came out this year and got it for $1125 with 3 years interest free financing.

:)
