Had a 65 gal with my alligator gar. Got too expensive to feed so I set him free.

125 gallon fresh.

have a 2 foot Red Tail Catfish that is eating me out of house and home.

Those are great fish. I used to have one. They were pretty expensive as far as freshwater fish go. Really cool looking. MASSIVE mouths that eat non stop, and they grow so fast.

those RTC's are wicked, i saw a video of them eating..lightning fast. I had a 125 gallon with a shoal of Pirahnas (5 super reds and 5 caribe), i was to lazy to clean the tank and what not so i sold the tank and gave the fish away.

They are eating machines. Its getting to the point where i have to throw entire chicken cutlets in the tank for him to eat before hand or he will eat all the fish food that i give to my other fish.

yeh i bought him a year ago. was 6 inches long at $75.

Hes grown to 2 feet in no time. I read they can row to be 90 lbs in lakes and ponds. Grow to be as big as men.

i also have in their which are full grown about 8-12 inches Oscar, Pacu, Motoguence, Buttacufferi, Flowerhorn, Wolf Fish, Jewel Pike, Convict.

Allthough i had more the Red Tail Cat is picking them off one by one.

At work on my desk I have an Eclipse Hex 5 gal with salties...
The key to keeping it in balance is

DEEP LIVE SAND bed
2 Big pieces of Live Rock /w critters all in it..
Cleanup crew 4 hermits, 2 snails, Clown Shrimp

Also I only have 2 Blue Damsels and a large Chocolate Chip Starfish

At home we have a 44 gal Hex with about 50 fresh water fish variety.
Cool ones are the Parrot Fish.

i dont like the deep sand beds... it traps a ton of nitrates and if it gets stirred... boom, wipeout.

i have a 40 tall reef.. nothing spectacular but it's nice.. 2 clowns, 2 firefish, 1 royal gramma and a bunch of crabs and critters...

oh, and a coral banded shrimp...

as for coral- shrooms, frogspawn, and xenia...

i want a 12 gallon cube for my desk at work.

37 gal cube reef, 45lbs live rock, coral, 2 clownfish, 1 clown goby, 1 bicolor blenny, 1 flame angel, 1 orange goby with the usual snails and hermits.

Most expensive hobby ever.

if i wanted to convert my 125 gallon fresh water tank to a salt water reef with live coral and shit with fish how much you think its gonna run me? and how muhc does maintenance cost and time do you put in? cleaning etc...

damn you really pack those fishies in there...all those fish/critters in a 5 gallon...and 50 fish in a 44..i would hate to be those fishies.

Dunk, Asian Redtail cats? If you want to get rid of them take them to a store, they will give you a lot of money--they are expensive fish.

I used to have a 180 Bowfront Saltwater. I had mostly fish but a few easy corals. Corals are so expensive and they can die even if you do everything right. Fish I had were Purple tangs, 5 percula clowns, 1 Hippo tang, 1 mandarin goby, 3 banded shrimp, anenomes and about 150 lbs of live rock.

Deep sand beds reduce nitrates. Been a ton of research on this.

mmm, and there are things that point to trapping trates... they are good unless you have some sand sifters that dont settle down...

i use the sand bed too.. just not that deep.. mine is probably 3 inches... i dont consider that "deep".

for the person thinking of the convert... lights are the expensive thing if you are going to keep coral.. halids will run you a pretty penny... PC's are far cheaper but not as strong (good trade off if you arent sure about the hobby)..

and yes, it is expensive to begin the hobby.. but once going, maintanance is easy and cheap.

The DSB bottom and Live Rock is home to Anerobic bacteria that will break down the Nitrates into harmless Nitrogen.

Your point on gas pockets forming due to detritus buildup is valid, unless you have a good cleanup crew(crabs, Starfish, shrimp) sifting and plowing thru it constantly to rid the sand of it..

I don't have to to monthly water changes AS OFTEN because of the Live rock and DSB removing much of the Nitrates in the water.

I will say that Live rock is safer for Anerobic conversion than DSB due to the mentioned gas pocket potential.
Hence why I have 2 big chunks of it in my 5 gal..

Not really..

My 5 gal only has 2 very small blue damsels, 1 sm shrimp, 1 Chocolate chip starfish and 3 small hermits and 2 turbo snails. The relative DSB is only 2 1/2 inches deep. Plenty of room for them to stake out territories.

The 44 gal hex is mostly small fish , gets super maintained and has a high end Flugal filter system. All water qualities are good and the fish are at different levels of the tank making for good room.

I may have over estimated the numbers in the 44 gal due to them being mostly small schooling fish.

thats the same exact tank i got, where do you top the water off in your tank? do you let it hit the motor part of the filter or just to the top of the pole that hangs under the motor box

I fill it to the black strip along the top of the tank glass.. No more or it will run over/leak. The motor is waterproof and can be underwater.

yeah thats what i do, i knew it was waterproof, ive just always had problems with tank temp, it hovers arournd 84, i was wondering if it was because i had the water level too high

With a lower water level....you could achieve slight cooling due to evaporative coolong as the water fell back into the tank.

But you would have calcium and magnesium carbonate (lime) to clean up and increased evaporation rates.

How long do you run your tank light ?
That will increase temps especially with the standard Incandescent in this tank..

I converted mine to a 50 50 flores blue/daylight bulb for my salties..
Cooler and the colors are much better with it..

Just screw it into the standard fixture..

i use the flourescent, i did use the standard bulb when i first got it and the temp went to 88, it stays at 84 now with the new bulb, light on or off, i just find it strange that the water runs warmer than room temp

For a typical reef setup with livestock and halide lamps, skimmer, sump, etc..., you're looking at 3-5k

Wow, we had a pond where I worked, had one in there. It was about 18 inches long. Sold for 300$ in about 2 weeks.

when i was younger i stole a redtail cat from the fish shop i worked at... 100 bucks retail 15 years ago...

i also had an electric cat and some fire fin eals... the electric cat is perhaps one of my favorite fresh water fish... cool fish, and they shock the shit out of you too (learned the hard way not to fuck with them)...

one day (i think i was high) i was doing a top off and added dechlor... but it wasnt dechlor, it was my ammonia test kit stuff... killed all my fish, including my stingray... PISSED!!!!
