Fish Oil: How much do you think we need?

Hey, reading a post here that recommends 30 - 45 grams of fish oil a day. Isn't that over kill? If you're buying good quality fish oil, thats gonna put a hole in your wallet.

Salmon is one of the higher sources for fish oil, and on I've read that on average one salmon will have about 1 gram of fish oil. So, counting that 30 - 45 grams of fish oil, or 30 - 45 dead salmon, is just insane in my opinion.

Anyone knowledgeable on this subject? I have been taking fish oil for a while now, but I only take about 4 - 5 grams a day. Doesn't oil stay in your body for a long time too?

Post your opinion, how much you take daily, and if any, what kind of results you have noticed from your dosage.

I'd wrather spend the extra buck on the one that doesn't reek when being digested. I work at a grocery store, so there's hunnies everywhere. I'd never want to risk smelling all fishy from a burp, thats why I'll spend the extra $10 on a bottle. Which is like 4 cents more a pill.

Up to you, Quality... not quantity

why would you spend alot on fish oil...just buy the cheap stuff.
works the same

Ive read and talked to many people that when it comes to choosing quality in any supplement, fish oil is way more of a requirement than others. Thats why i spend the extra buck.

I think its because fish oil can go bad very easily if not maintained properly, or in the case of cheap fish oil, isn't as potent as good quality due to the way its manufactured. So taking less good quality may be equivalent to a lot more of bad quality.

Because the cheap stuff is contaminated with PCB's.

There are a few that are pure (e.g., OmegaRx), but only one is certified by the FDA to be pure. You need a prescription for it. It's called Lovaza and 2-4 g/day is all you need. It has more EPA than any other fish oil on the market.

So ive done some more researching and 30 - 45 grams of omegas is insane. I think whoever had posted this must have been taking 30 - 45 grams of like 10% purified fish oil in order to get 3 - 5 grams of the omegas you want from the oil.

The fish oil i take is expensive, Nordic Naturals, Ultima Omegas and it is 70% purified with 640 mg of omegas in each capsule. so, I take 4 - 5 caps a day to get my 2 grams of omegas a day. 640 x 5 x .7 = 2.2 grams...all u really need for a healthy diet. I've read that anymore than 5 is only recommended for people that are sick or on some special doctor monitored diet.

3-5 grams/day

This is about right. I use Carlson's Finest lemon flavor. One tablespoon a day is about 5 grams of fish oil and the bottle lasts about a month. Best tasting liquid on the market imo.
