First Show

Hey everyone,

I have decided that I am going to enter a local show.
The show will be in a year and 4 months.
I figured that this is something that I have always wanted to do, so this is the time.
I am currently 30 years old, 5"10, 243 pounds, 25 percent bf (Estimate). I have more muscle than the average person, but do carry alot of bodyfat.
I have been training for about 5 years now, and feel like I have a good base to start from.

My question is, where do I start?
I have spoken to a trainer here in town, who is also a competitor, who says that I should focus on weights and no cardio now. I should also begin to slowly modify my diet as well and start replacing simples with complex carbs and upping my protein.
My goal for the show is to simpy be able to step on stage. I would like to win, however, will feel like I have won if I am simply able to compete with the other bodybuilders.
I would like to come in under 10 percent body fat and muscular.
If I give myeslef the year and 4 months, would this be possible?

Also, should I be doing cardio now or does the advice that I have received from the trainer sound like its on the money.

Please help with some insight. I will give Karma to all that help.

I dont do shows bro, so I dont know much. But I do know you are high on bf%. I believe you should be doing cardio to bring that down. Also i'm going to assume you will be getting on gear, so its best you start your cycle at a much lower bf%, like 15 percent or so.

I don't do shows either, but mybe you should try to diet down and try to get down to about 15/16% bf first, and then bulk. maybe your trainer told you not to do cardio because you he thinks you should bulk first and then cut, but it's hard for me to say sitting in front of a computer. do you have any pics to post up? I'm sure if you post pics some competitors around here will beable to give you good advice. Also, you could be off with your bf estimate, it's easy to misjudge

you can change your body in 4 months no prob.

we are in the same boat I have LOTS of muscle but veer toward to heavy end, not fat but not lean either.

with us too much of anything is bad.

I have recently dropped 20-25 pounds of BF when I actually cut back on cardio

on the days I lift I lift like a body builder and do lots of sets and reps with decent weight.

my own product www.Amplify02.com has helped alot with power and the ability to burn fat while I workout.

my new split is this

day 1 Back, Bis
day 2 Cardio
day 3 Chest, Tris, light Delts
day 4 Legs

I actually like to switch it up to back/tri's and chest/bi's.. this allows me to hit the accessories harder, since they aren't fatigued from the bigger compound movements.. i switch between your combo and mine every 3 months. :)

Ilike to do Tris on Delt and Chest day ( push day basically) because my connective tissues need to recover
part of the reason I never had elbow or rotator cuff problems

Mon.-Chest
Tues.-shoulders
Wens.-OFF
Thurs.-Arms
Fri.-Legs
Sat.-Back

Eat 250-300g of protein every day along with clean and complex carbs...stop your carb intake after 5:00 pm...after this time eat protein only...your main goal is to get bf down while maintaining muscle mass...

Thanks everyone that has posted, it is much appreciated.
I think I will add the cardio first thing in the morning, monday to friday
and will train in the evening. Obviously at this point, diet will be key.
I will keep you guys posted on my progress.
Cheers

good thread . . I notice a lot of you guys seem to only do cardio one day per week. I am trying to drop bf too, I am at 15% and I do cardio three days per week for 30 min after I lift. I am lifting light now 5 days per week high rep. Diet is clean, protein and complex carbs every 2.5 to 3 hours. 1 gal of water per day. Love handles are out of control. Critique please !

I do cardio 3 times per week...in the mornings on an empty stomach...

You may want increase your water intake (especially while on aas)...I drink 1 gallon per 100lbs. of bodyweight...I'm currently 245lbs. so I drink 2.5 gallons...

I was able to drop 20-25 lbs of fat when I upped the endurance on my leg and back days.

I love running for cardio and was actually a bit too heavy this time around to do it everyday, so I compensated with added intensity on back and leg days

Treat your leg and back days as if they were olympic endurance events.

And I was not being spammy when I said www.Amplify02.com helped me get the job done

yeah dude, I have abs, but my love handles still jiggle. I will give the YES a shot. A few years ago I tried some stuff from Avant Labs that had yohimbe Hcl and it was topical. I didn't do shit. Is YES the same basic stuff or not?

This is easily possible I train amature national level and pro BB and fitness/figure competitors alike. I do charge if it gets to a one on one situation...emails, consults. I can help some here but I will say I took a chick from being pregnant to steping onstage and getting second in female open BBing in 5 months...she was 7.8%....I had a client lose 110# in one year plus he gained muscle so it was probably like 125# of fat. This is easy brother.....well not easy...it will hurt! AHHHH THE SUFFERING! ;)

Awesome, I hope you don't mind if I pick your brain.

My first question would be, should I be starting cardio now or just solely
focusing on heavy training and diet?

Really 80% of this is diet. Thats where to start. As far as Training goes I would hold off on the cardio. Heavy basic movements. Reps around 8-10.
