Firefighter

I am about to go to a fire academy, then get a emt license..

My question is- how easy/hard it is to find a job as a full time firefighter? I feel I would have an advantage on others (well around here anyways) cause I am more fit then them. Just curious..

Sometimes places can be very political when hiring full time firefighters. You will have a better chance if your a EMT with FF credentials. You will have an even better chance if your a Paramedic with FF credentials. I dont know what part of the country you live in, but volunteering is also a way to get yourself known in the fire service. Being fit counts, but not for much. We have a standard fitness test that gives you a year long certificate of passing fitness that you can show hiring departments that are giving a FF aptitude test. If you pass the fitness test your deemed physically fit, and although its not "very" easy it is passable if you have enough heart, even if your not in great shape. If you have any specific questions let me know. I'll try to answer then to the best of my ability.

Its pretty hard in Southern California. I tested for Los Angeles County Fire, and so did 45,000 others. Other cities in Cali wont even look at your app if you are not a paramedic. You have to at least be EMT certified and having a degree helps. Try getting a job at the local hospital in the ER as an ER tech(same creds as a EMT) or as a EMT for a ambulance company, they will like that experience. Also look into the Forestry service, and any kind of volunteer stuff in the medical or fighter fighter field is a plus. I have heard that in other states being a fire fighter is not as popular as it is in California, so maybe it wont be that hard. Good Luck.

become a medic, start working on an associates or bachelors in fire science or emergency management or some related field.

take any test you can, even if u have no desire to work for that city. you will get to know what tests are from what companies. write down any questions u can remember as soon as u get to your car and go home and double check them. if you are allowed to review the test after go and do it and do the same thing.

it is definately a job trying to get this job. dont over look your interview skills when you get to that point. i took 40 tests before i got on. part time or volunteer experience can be a big plus, but every dept is different. bigger cities tend to have less politics involved since they go straight down the list

alot of good info at www.eatstress.com and firehouse.com
