Finding work overseas....

Where does one look? Please save the "overseas" answer. Must be a service somewhere that specializes in this. I am finding that almost everyone I talk to is totally brain dead around here. Comparing the mental depth of our posters vs our foreign posters has made a believer out of me.

Not to mention all the whales showing up at the health club.

Big companies usually have branches in foreign countries.
You could write to these companies and ask if they are hiring people to work in foreign countries.
Or do you want to work in an enterprise from another country?

Hmmm....good question. Either one has pros and cons though my preference would be to dissolve my American relationship for the time being.

I'm not at all unamerican but I am skeptical of the current proceedings and they are very important.

Something you might enjoy is teaching English in Japan for a year or so. The pay is good and you can have sex with all of the Japanese girls you can handle.

I'm leaving today.

Would they not require more than a Bachelors in Business and Economics? My gpa was not so great due to working my way through and generally poor study habits. I studied a lot but I studied what interested me.

All you need is to speak English and have some sort of degree.

The Japanese do not have the sexual taboos that westerners do. they believe sex to be natural and necessary. Nothing sinful about it. So basically, meet pretty women, help them with their English and have lots of fun.

Interesting....I did a 90 page paper on Japan. Is Hindu the dominant religin there? I did a Hindu wedding and was very pleased with the people. The Kama Sutra hails from India/Hinduism around 300 AD. People have been doing "nasty" things since time began.

Where do I start on this adventure?

From my understanding, they are mostly Buddhist .

Here is a web site for the official government program:

http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/JET 2003/index.htm

But there are lots of smaller services that can place you.

You'll probably find that your schools alumni association has members in all the major world cities with contact information. There's millions and millions of American emigrants overseas, I'd try and talk to someone in your locale of choice and generate some contacts.

Japan would be cool though. You can buy worn schoolgirl's panties from vending machines on the street, which would save you all that fighting and running and hiding and shit.

Vending machines offer no sport. The running and hiding and fighting is what makes it so much fun.:D

Go up under Yahoo and change your LOCATION to another country like UK and browse their classifieds.

Some tech companies here have openings overseas. Motorola is a huge overseas employer. Many staffing agencies also select for international travel.

Apply with international airlines and/or cruise ships. Cruise ships are a big hit. I am thinking of with all the days I have off at my job, to take an on call position this summer with Carnival Cruise Line. The pay will be shit, but I can cruise for free and only do 6 hours of work each day in exchange for free room, food, and travel enjoyments. Carnival and Royal Carribean and the other cruise lines use my company exclusively to staff their on board ship doctors.

Or you can look into the Job Corps and see if they have anything there. Sometimes you may have to volunteer to get your face seen before they put you out in the field.

Do a search on Monster.com and use the International as your key word to search by.

Im considering a move to Ireland after college to work as a police officer,I know the money isnt all that great but living there would make it better,2Thick have you been to Ireland?

Currently I am considering taking a entry level cruise line position for the time between feb and sept but have to look into it more throughly,Can anyone give me input on this?

Thanks...lots of good ideas. I really like the cruise ship idea in particular. I don't need more money but I need more stuff to do. Demand for photography is the first thing to go in a recession. I could do on call work and travel is my greatest passion.

Ireland is a wonderful place to live these days.

It is the fastest growing economy in the EU.

the only drawback is the somewhat gloomy weather. But as Canadian, it would not be much of a stretch...LOL

Dublin is especially a wonderful metropolitan city. the only drawback is that Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in the EU.

I've spent time there. Regular Irish cops are cool, not friendly but polite and they seem inclined to turn a blind eye to things as long as nobody is getting hurt. The non-uniformed, uzi-toting ones in the unmarked navy-blue cars are complete pricks.

The pay sucks. I think they start at about 20K USD. The cops were actually going to strike because the Irish economy has grown so fast their pay has fallen way behind. Cops with years experience make less than kids in entry level jobs in the private sector. Ireland therefore recruits immigrants heavily for jobs like nursing, so they might start with the cops too. I mean who wants to be a cop when you make less money than everybody else and you don't even get a gun?

It's expensive too. Your Canadian pesos won't go far there! Lol.

TB, pinpoint countries you think you may like to work/live and then check on visa requirements before you launch into finding work.

Europe is the most difficult if you do not have a European passport. It varies from country to country, but they have tightened requirements considerably in the last few years. I'm not sure about Asian countries.

Each country has detailed information on their embassy websites on visa/work requirements.

If you want to give Australia a try, i will help you.

You can always go the illegal route and pick up work when you get into the country on a holiday visa, but if you are illegal, the jobs you will be getting will be pretty shitty and low paying.......which is not the way to do it.

Hmmm....Australia is at the top of the list. I could wear my Speedos there without alarming people.:)

Thanks for the info

Im leaning towards the cruise position at the moment,I really want to see the world before college and I figured this would be a sweet way to start

TB - where do you live? Cruise ships always need photographers to be on board and take pics of their customers so they can try to sell them in the gift shop.

My neighbor is a photographer. He just did the entire Avon, Gucci, and Revlon Christmas brochures. Every page in there is his work. He often makes between 1-6 thousand per day for his work. He used to live in NYC and had to fly to 80% of his shoots in South Beach, so he just moved down here. Now he only has to drive half an hour to get there. Look into the South Beach area.

I live in Denver. I sent a "resume" to carnival yesterday regarding on call work though Denver is not ideal for that. Thanks for the idea.

Photographers are like artists. Some make it big. I have considered moving to Lauderdale many times but I knew it was my nuts thinking. I was going to get a house boat, call it the Luv Shak and do mondo model photography. :D

you foks looking into cruise ships must be high.

i researched 4 of them about 3 years ago when i was considering it. wanna know what i found out?

6 days * 12 hour days

OR

7 days * 10 hour days

carnival was one of the ones i looked at, too.

the ONLY exceptions are the entertainers. are you a magician, photographer, or scuba instructor? if you are, it might be worth a shot.

If you are under the age of 25, then it is EASY to get a one year work permit for Australia. Over 25 and the rules change and it becomes difficult. However, the application fee is like 1200 dollars.

The best field to find work in, overseas, is the IT and Telecommunications fields. Alot of european countries do not have the skill sets with-in their domestic work force to satisfy the demand. And will offer work permits to Americans. (That's how I got to Holland - I was hired by the local operation of a large american multinational, received a permanent contract and can stay here indefinately. After 5 years I am able to apply for the EU passport)

Go to the SAIC webpage (www.saic.com) search through their international jobs database and apply for the jobs that you are qualified for. I got a job offer from them when I got out of Tech school to go to Mannheim and work. I turned that particular offer down because they offerend no relocation assistance. Eventually I found my current position.

Also, be aware, that salaries outside of the US are 1/2 of what they are in the US. Expect to take a major pay cut, but you are rewarded by so many other things - life style, language, culture, etc.

Forget the cruise lines. You will be treated like an indentured servant, work horribly long hours, never get any rest, and forget about sight-seeing when the ship make port calls - that is for the paying passengers. It ain't your parents Love Boat.
