If you are under the age of 25, then it is EASY to get a one year work permit for Australia. Over 25 and the rules change and it becomes difficult. However, the application fee is like 1200 dollars.
The best field to find work in, overseas, is the IT and Telecommunications fields. Alot of european countries do not have the skill sets with-in their domestic work force to satisfy the demand. And will offer work permits to Americans. (That's how I got to Holland - I was hired by the local operation of a large american multinational, received a permanent contract and can stay here indefinately. After 5 years I am able to apply for the EU passport)
Go to the SAIC webpage (
www.saic.com) search through their international jobs database and apply for the jobs that you are qualified for. I got a job offer from them when I got out of Tech school to go to Mannheim and work. I turned that particular offer down because they offerend no relocation assistance. Eventually I found my current position.
Also, be aware, that salaries outside of the US are 1/2 of what they are in the US. Expect to take a major pay cut, but you are rewarded by so many other things - life style, language, culture, etc.
Forget the cruise lines. You will be treated like an indentured servant, work horribly long hours, never get any rest, and forget about sight-seeing when the ship make port calls - that is for the paying passengers. It ain't your parents Love Boat.
