Finding A Mate Takes Less Than 3 Minutes

Finding the love of your life takes less time than you think, a lot less, according to a new study.

Researchers say single people can actually access a potential mate in minutes, or just seconds, rather than weeks or months.

The research team surveyed people who participated in a speed dating service for their findings. They said most men and women made their dating decisions mostly on physical attributes, such as attractiveness, height and weight. Other factors were pretty much ignored.

"Although they had three minutes, most participants made their decision based on the information that they probably got in the first three seconds,"

and that's why there are so many divorces nowadays. People mistake lust for love so they get married after being together a year or so then 5 years down the road, they realize that it was a mistake.

i have seen this study before....i was under the impression it was for "sex" only...meaning how long does it take for a male vs. female to make up their mind to have sex (mate) with the opposite gender....
Males: usually make up their minds within 3 seconds
Females: take on the average 20 seconds to decide whether or not they will have sex with a certain male....

I read about that in the newspaper about 3 months ago. New university students were asked to make a judgement about each other after 3 minutes (either like as a friend, potential lover, or dislike) - they were asked how they felt about each other after I think, a 4 month period. 100% of the 180 or so students predicted who and how they would like/dislike each other

Funny you should mention this, because I used the article for a reading comprehension task, when I was teaching English to Thai people.

I fell for my husband completely in about a week. That's ironic since I was very opposed to even dating when he first asked me out. We both knew right away. I'm glad we didn't get married then though. We needed to break up for a few months 2 years into things. That was crucial in figuring out what we both wanted.

Raina :when i met my ex-wife a few years ago, i knew instantly that i was totally in love with her...i refused to even go out with her on a date for 1 year...after that we were in-seperable and eventually got married 4 years later...my marraige lasted about 14 months-then she was gone.....

Online dating is just plain weird.

For more info

The study will be published in an upcoming edition of the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.

I guess knowing that you have only 3 minutes to assess someone anyway, you really can't expect to draw much more insight than just the looks & the initial vibe anyway. Plus there has to be an attitude that you go into a speed dating session -- there is a "way" to do it and its got to get tedious doing that intense 3 minute thingy with other people who do that and you can pretty much just pick out who you would or would not bang.

I guess to the above question -- the experiment itself is skewed because of the environment and the motivations that surround it. YOu can't really extrapolate those conclusions to "real life" and draw a massive generalization.

that's peer reviewed?
I dunno but if it's published in this journal I guess it's some serious study

Just goes to show that you really never know. It doesn't matter if you meet someone in a bar, online, through a dating service, through friends, etc etc.

My opinion is that chemistry is not dependent on time whatsoever. You either have it or you don't, and you "feel it" right away (immediately). I don't think it takes weeks or months of dating someone to figure out if the chemistry is there. Me personally, I'd agree that I judge someone right away within minutes.

It depends wheter you're driven by your emotions or by logical reasonings

It takes less than 2 mins to find a loser but it takes years to find a dream partner.

I walk a lonely road
The only one I that have ever known
Don't know were it goes
But its home and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Were the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I'll walk alone

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And were I walk alone

Read between the lines of what's
F**ked up and every things all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I'll walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Were the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a..

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find
Till then I'll walk away!

Too weird yasmina, I was going to post that about walking down the boulevard of broken dreams. There are lots of songs that reference that. WHo is that? The one that I was thinking of was the new Green Day's but I dont know much of the words.

Shared moral values are less important than compatible personalities as a recipe for a good marriage, according to a study released on Sunday.

Married couples often share the same attitudes about faith and other values, researchers from the University of Iowa found. But those with personalities similar to their spouses were the happiest.

"People may be attracted to those who have similar attitudes, values and beliefs and even marry them," the researchers said, and those qualities are easy to spot in a potential mate. Attitudes toward subjects such as religion or politics "are highly visible," they said.

But how married people behave was shown to have a greater effect on happiness.

"Being in a committed relationship entails regular interaction and requires extensive coordination in dealing with tasks, issues and problems of daily living," the study found. Differences in how to deal with everyday matters can lead to "more friction and conflict," it said.

Personality-driven traits -- like being open, easy-going or organized -- are likely to play a bigger role in the marriage, the researchers found after studying 291 newly married couples.
