A forum that really works... so here we go.,.
I've been doing alot of research on this topic for awhile now. I've had a hard time with the research due to conflicting information. I've been lifting now for 4 years. I have eaten been eating on diet I found in the Bodybuilding Bible for Men for sometime. 3200 calories, 200 from protein etc.....
Over the past 5 years i've gained about 19lbs and my current body fat is 13%.(5'9 153lbs i will be 24 soon).
My goal is to maintain a body weight of 170lbs, with a body fat below 10%. I've tried everything to gain weight, but i just can't do it. I've seem to come to a spot were I can gain anymore weight.
Does anybody have any advice for me, and are steroids the right answer for me? I'm willing to take a risks, and have weighed the pros and cons. I am not a complete newb, but if you must flame me, go ahead. Also i read the thread about newbs coming on here and just asking for information. I"ve just read so much by now and need somebody to spell it out for me.
Thanks in advance.

Be patient, gaining weight gets much easier after you hit 25 years old.

i hear that--wait til you hit 40....i am being stalked by a set of love handles

No kidding.

I never thought I would get past 175 and now I am almost 200. This was done training naturally too. You have to stick with it and eat. The harder you train, the bigger you get. The bigger you get, the more you eat.

3200 cals and 200 from protein? So you're only getting 50 grams of protein a day????? Or did you mean 200 grams of protein? Eat more protein.

5 years and 19 lbs? Ouch. That's 3.8 lbs/yr. I'd be frustrated too. All the researching you've done I'm surprised you've never run across anything that told you you need to eat a lot more food. Also kinda surprised you didn't just figure it out.

Sounds like you need to throw away the "Bodybuilding Bible for Men" too.

Listen, what cboogs said is VERY true. Man, I was like 170 at your age, and i'm 6'5!! After I hit 27 I started to gain weight. I've done 2 cycles in 6 yrs, and I maintain a weight of 235-240 w/ 13-15 % bf at age 33. I understand your pain. but the honest truth is you need to just eat better/more and vary up your training routines to shock your muscles. you might even need to train less depending upon your routine!! Save the roids for when you've plateaued out. that will prob be at 175-180. Trust me, it will come in time.....

If all you are eating is 3200 cal/day and your B/F is 13% tells me you aren't eating enough because 3200 cal/day is about maintenance level for your weight and probably eatting too many simple carbs and there's your problem. You should up your cals about 500 cal/day and make them clean cals not crap. To gain muscle you should have about 1.5 - 2 GM protein /lb of body weight/day.

You may also be over-training. If you have 4 yrs of training behind you then you should be training 1 major and 1 minor muscle group per day and only once a week. Also keep the sets around 10-12 per muscle group and reps in the 5 - 8 rep range except calves and abs and up the intensity at least between 65 - 85% 1 RM Use compound multi-joint movements and leave the shaping moves until you have enough mass to shape. Nothing looks more ridiculous than a guy with no pecs doing cable crossovers or avoids squats but does tons of leg extensions or the like. Keep the rest between sets around 2 mins for major muscle groups like chest, back and legs and 60 - 90 secs on smaller muscle groups like shoulders, bi's, tri's, abs and calves. If you can't get through your training sessions in an hour or less not including warming up on a treadmill, bike, elyptical, etc. for 10 mins before you get started, then you are either doing too much, resting too long or working the mandibles more than your target muscle groups. Drink at least a gal of water a day, no soda, no fast foods, get at least 8 hrs sleep a night, keep the alcohol to a minimum and fuck your g/f sig other as much as possible (great cardio ;))

Wait on the gear until you have at least gotten up to about 185 - 200lbs and 10% or less B/f naturally. Be patient. Feel free to ask questions.

i've got the body of a cross country runner. I've tried all kinda crazy supplements by now. And yes, i eat close to 200g, of protein day. The issue for me is that I work out alot!! Not because I want to put uncle sam tells me to(if you know what i mean). most of the time I do pt for a hour run, pu, su. Then with in a half hour i'm in the gym for an hour. After that some time i go home and run. I don't possible think i could eat more, can i use a 800cal shake, or is that no good?

eat more bro,i was 145lbs at 5 11 and got to 180 natty, now im 210 with the help of aas.dedication is the key,you have to live and breath this lifestyle if you wanna see results

weight gainer shake go or no go ?

stick with real food and limit shakes to pre & post workout, possibly a casein b4 bed but u can have cottage cheese for that.

in general i would say no just knowing what's in alot of those shakes. there are some ok ones out there. what did u have in mind?

eat more protein. You want to add a shake? Add a protein shake. Get whey isolate. You want more substance to it? Add a couple tablespoons of olive oil. Looks like you're probably eating enough carbs. Stop overtraining too. If you have to do all the running, whatever, then limit your gym time to 3 days/week. Look for a program that is adaptable to this. Go over and read the training info sticky at the top of the training forum.

I have to agree with ceo, you are way overtrained. If you don't have to do all the running in the evening then don't. I also agree with 8and20, don't rely on shakes. Geez, the supps industry just loves the gullible. Eat real food. You say you can't eat any more, that's not true, you just don't think you can eat more. It's called if you want it bad enough you will do whatever it takes.

How often do you hear people say, "I wish I could do"... fill in the blank. You can do anything you truly want to do if you want it bad enough otherwise it's just a passing fancy. So rather than look for the quick fix or make excuses find a way if it's what you really want. If you are military then I'm sure you've heard the expression, "Improvise, adapt, overcome".

I'm sorry to give you a hard time, but take it in the spirit given. I'm talking to you like I talk to the young guys and gals I train everyday. Peace.

guys, there's nothing wrong with a good protein shake. If the guy is having trouble eating enough, he can add a shake. I just say protein only, no "weight gainer" shakes that are loaded with carbs. The OP is eating plenty of carbs from the looks of it. He needs more protein and less training.

I wouldn't recommend shakes as more than 50% of your protein, as you still need to eat real food. But, a good whey isolate protein shake is going to give him good, useable protein.
