It's being touted as one of the biggest breakthroughs in fertility treatments since in-vitro fertilization. Experts have discovered a way to super charge sperm. It's already increasing the odds of pregnancy.
(WSVN) -- Charlene and Rufus Smith are among thousands of couples with unexplained infertility.
Charlene Smith: "I got to the point where I said Lord please help me to overcome this and accept the fact that I can't get pregnant."
A breakthrough fertility treatment "discovered" by Dr. Brijinder Minhas - is changing that.
Reproductive Physiologist, Dr.Brijinder Minhas: "I think this is one of the greatest things since sliced bread."
Washing sperm in P.A.F - a subtance men naturally produce - boosts it's power.
Dr. Brijinder Minhas: "It gives them a kick, gives them a jump-start and they take off."
When combined with artificial insemination - P.A.F may increase pregnancy rates -- by up to 40 percent.
Dr. Kenneth Gelman, Infertility and Reproductive Medicine of South Broward: "This is a huge number."
The clinical research done by Reproductive Biology Associates in Atlanta is published in this month's Fertility and Sterility Journal.
The technology also used in South Florida may spare many couples from expensive and painful fertility treatments.
Dr. Kenneth Gelman, Infertility and Reproductive Medicine of South Broward: "We feel that this could significantly reduce their time and effort in order to conveive a pregnancy."
After 14 years of trying -
Charlene Smith: "This time it just worked within days I knew I was pregnant."
The Smith's baby boy or girl is due early next year.
Rufus Smith: "Just don't give up, just keep trying."
The P.A.F technique is not F.D.A approved but experts predict it'll catch on fast.
It's an additional $400 dollars and isn't covered by insurance.
