if you have a windows system - turn on file extensions so that you can see what type it is - they will hide them so that the icon and extension looks like it is an image - but it is really a vbs file that gets executed when you click on it.
if you have file extensions turned on, then you can prevent this...

(this will vary slightly per system, but this is win2k)
in any folder, go to tools, then folder options, then view, and then in there, unselect hide file extensions...

Here's the problem with everyone's concept of this product, the sheer amount of data couldn't be stored or reviewed in enough time to react to the contents of the data.

The feds probably install the virus on the machines of 'suspects'. The code likely replaces keyboard buffer components.

I doubt highly that the gov is in cahoots with MS or Apple to add funky code to networking components. Since the grunts at those companies are just as paranoid as all the other techies and someone would leak the code.

And just to clarify, the lantern allows the feds to 'see through' the white noise made by VPN tunnels, it doesn't decrypt anything.
The hype around this code is greater than the code itself.

PS. Beav. I still have that 500 if you can get through that firewall I listed

RE: wizardnor black ice is a network fire wall witch will protect you from hackers but it will not save you in the case of a script attack, for something to protect you from that you need Zone alarm or norton personel firewall. cause nowadays you can get viruses just by visiting web pages ain't that great!

Umm, could you explain your statement. Actually to be specific I'm interested in knowing what you define as a 'network' firewall and why it would perform differently than one made for personal use.

I never open anything sent to me - whether I know the person or not.
text files I'll open, but not .doc or .xls since there are vbs macros one can run to manipulate your system (with registry access no less).

technically any script file is a text file - but if your system recognies the extension as an executable, then when you click on it, instead of opening it to read, it will run it instead.
right click on it, and then say open with... some text reader - I use textpad personally

I open mine with ClarisWorks. But then I use a mac for personal use.
