Fake Viagra Tablets Seized in Thailand
BANGKOK (Reuters) Mar 22 - Thai police say that they have seized 100,000 fake Viagra (sildenafil) pills and charged four men with manufacturing counterfeit medicine in the biggest bust of its kind in Thailand.
Officials from New York City-based Pfizer Inc., which makes the erectile dysfunction drug, helped with the investigation and accompanied police on the raid, Police Colonel Thitiraj Nongpanpitak said.
He told Reuters that officers arrested three Thais and a Turkish man in three different but coordinated raids on the outskirts of Bangkok on Thursday. He said that police traced the gang through the Internet, where they had taken orders for their product.
"We have arrested several retail dealers in the past, but this time it is the largest seizure," he said. He said that the fake Viagra pills were a combination of diluted genuine Viagra and tapioca starch. They had a production cost of less than 20 baht (30 pence) a pill, but could be sold for 20 times that.
