I believe that they started off with a small belief, but they let that belief manifest over time into hatred coupled with a sociopathic mindset until they felt that the only way to solve what they saw as a problem was with extreme violence.

NO! why? because it wouldnt be logical. he wouldnt believe that punishing the unbeliever would serve any cause except legal trouble for himself, and because said legal trouble would not further any cause, it would be illogical to cause violence, unlike many peoples of different faiths who dont seem to mind wiping out hoards of people in the name of their god.
