Extended Car Warrantee? Worth it or no?

blueta2

New member
I want to buy a 3 yr ext. warrantee for my car. It only came with a 3 yr bumper to bumper, 6 year power train.
Is it worth buying the ext warrantee or risk it? The cost is $2000 Canadian for 3 extra years.

What model car.. that matters partly..

Generally they are not worth it unless the vehicle has a poor reliabilty rating, as
that gives its a higher chance or percentage of it having issues after 3 years.
And you plan on keeping it longer than 4 years.

Or maybe worth it if your financial situation is such that an unplanned last minute $2000 hit for an engine or computer repair would leave you stranded. But that is why people should have a rainy day fund.

you said extension right?

Meaning that you already have some warranty on it by default?

If your car is brand new then i don't think it is worth it. Because very rarely, would you have a problem.

Even if you did, it will cost you cheaper than that warranty price.

i bought the 100,000 mile extended warranty on 2 of my cars.

on the first car, an '87 mercury sable, the extended warranty paid for itself .....had a/c, fuel injection, cat converter, CV joints, transmission, radio, power mirrors rapaired/replaced.

on the second car, a '95 mercury grand marquis (the best long distance road trip car i have EVER owned!) i lost money on the extended warranty.

i have since bought 2 hondas and one toyota and LOL'd when they tried to get me to buy the optional warranty packages.

if i was to buy a less reliable, less well built car than a toyota or honda i might consider it.

I bet if a person adds up costs of extended warranties and compare it to actual amount you've needed them, you would have one lop-sided difference.

yes ext. The car came with a 3 year bumper to bumper.
The car is a Mazda 6 Sport.
I am just imaging something going wrong and I hear "yep, that will be $2000 please"
The only issue I ever had with the car was a disfuncting driver side window and two warped front disc breaks. Other than that, the car is a GEM!

Hey......so hmm, you think with Japanese I am safe? My last car was a GM and it lasted 13 yrs. I had a lot of issues with that one.

If you buy the PT Cruiser you better buy an extended warranty for the extended warranty. :)

it depends............what is the cost of the mazda extended warranty? what is covered? what do they NOT cover? ("the devil is in the details")

i may get blasted for this....but i do not believe that nissan and mazda are quite up to the excellent quality control that toyota/lexus and honda has right now.....i do not believe that a mazda/nissan will be as reliable as a toyota or honda. close, but not as good. just MY thoughts.

yes, i agree....if i do buy a new/near new PT crusier or jeep liberty i WILL negociate the extended warranty in with the purchase price.

with a rav-4 i won't bother.

Not only no but HELL NO! Thats all!

If you insist on buying an extended warranty, buy it online you will realize the 1000's only is hundreds!

It's like insurance if you get it you hope you never need to use it, if you don't have it you are fucked if something breaks.

One of our work trucks blew it's engine at 48,000 mile and luckily we had the extended warranty. I think the warranty was $3,000 and a new engine was $8,000. So we could have almost gotten three warranties for what one engine cost.

Yea, Toyota/Lexus is historically on top. But..

They are so close in quality IMO and in the raw Numbers, that when you put Nissan's much lower cost per feature in the mix, Nissan comes out ahead for many smart consumers over Toyota. I have no comment on Mazda since they are in bed with Ford..

nissan seems to have cheaper interiors than a toyota....the seats wear out quicker, more squeaks and rattles after a few years than a toyota.

every nissan that either "car & driver" or "road & track" has done a long term road test one got slammed for it's interiors and quality control issues.

glancing into cars while walking thru parking lots; it looks like the current generation of nissan sentra's are having the interior issues the car magazines mentioned.

when's the last time u heard anyone complain about their corolla or camry or avalon or tacoma or tundra????

again, i say....if i spend 25, 30K (or more!) for a car i want it to stay together, not break down or squeak or rattle before i finish paying for the damn thing.

lots of good advice guys...thanks. I am still confused.
The cost is $2000 (tx includ) for 3 years. You get the exact same coverage as the original warrantee. I only have 47, 000 km (30,000 miles) on her.
I tend to agree. I do think Honda is a better built car.

on line? How and where? Would it not be the same as the dealer?

this is EXACTLY how I feel and what I am worried about. Isn't the engine covered under the powertrain?

Parts of the engine are but not certain things. The cause of our enging blow up was a cracked injector port. You have to really read the fine print on the warranty to see exactly what is and what isn't covered.

Warrantees sound good...until the fine print has been read.

If they don't feel like making good on a warrantee....they probably don't have to.

I recommend 3 years on any lap top purchase though.

On our new Honda accord (in 1994. lol) We got the 6 year 100,000 mile warranty and did not use it once. It cost $950 or $1000 for it, so I figured why not? But I will not buy it again for any other car.

The car has 110k miles and still going strong. lol Bought it for $16k cash. Not a bad investment.

With proper maintenance, I figure good cars should last 250,000. I like to drive them until they quit.

I wanted to go for 400,000 on my Ford van. Then it got totalled. Got 10/cents on the dollar for pretty new tires. 5/cents on the dollar for the lifetime warranteed transmission overhaul. Nothing for the custom interior. Maybe 10/cents on the dollar for the paint job.

Moral? If you take care of an old car....pray that noyone hits it.

This is the point my boyfriend made.....I will not even make it to 100 k in 6 years. I am seeing more for nay than for yes on this subject

Try to get a new battery before the warrantee expires. You will need a couple replacements if you use it a lot.

Isn't there a clause in warrantees that says you need regular maintenance from their "approved" or dealership mechanics to keep the warrantee valid? If you don't do the scheduled maintenance, then you're out of luck or something like that. I thought i read that somewhere. I could be way wrong. Someone else may know.

If that is the case, there are so many maintenance checkpoints that you won't do them all. Every few thousand miles there's something to be done to the car. Not just "tune up" and other common stuff.

I am VERY anal about my car and always take it for reg maintenance. Wash it and wax it all the time. Hell, I have no kids, this is my baby..hehe!
I think I may pass and not get the ext war. It's a gamble I suppose!

And how does washing & waxing = maintenance? Unless there is a lot of salt on the road....still not sure it would help much.

yes, a low mileage driver is at a disadvantage sometimes....my current car is 6 years old and only has 51K on it.

I meant along with washing and washing, I go in for reg main. on the car.
