Expiration on Food

How do you feel about best before dates? What is too far over the date to deserve throwing out? I'm a total hypochondriac when it comes to best before dates. If it's going to expired the next day , I wouldn't eat it at all. I'll just basically throw it out.

Especially when buying food items, I always pick an item that would stay fresh longer. I wouldn't buy an item if doesn't have a expiration. It just gonna make me nuts w/o looking the expiration before i buy it.

I'm the same way. ...after a few bouts of food poisoning, including one that resulted in a trip to the ER, I'm totally paranoid about leftovers and old food. I'd rather waste a few bucks than go through that again.

...they probably hate me at the grocer, since I'm the one who's always rearranging stuff in the cold case to get the freshest milk, cottage cheese, or whatever that they keep at the back.

The "best buy" or "sell by" dates are only the dates when the retailer is required to sell the food by.....it's not when it actually expires...

A lot of food is actually good for a time after the printed date.....the date doesn't mean that BAM! the food all of a sudden expires then & there....

A majority of food poisoning cases really happen from improper food storage or unsanitary handling rather than the food going badly itself....

:lmao: they hate me too especially the one who stock foods.

Your nose. use it. it works better than any other measure of a foods freshness/level of degradation.

a distant relative last night "kaw'd" my "awe een" last night at the Borgata. you owe me $800. im serious.

LOL, yeah, I've been told this as well...but I still don't like to eat foods on or after the expiration or "best before" dates. LOL.

Like everything with a rating, there is a safety factor built in. That date is the absolute, no fucking way it's bad, minimum time to sell by.
However, I always go by smell. Especially with cold meaets & dairy products. I've returned so much cottage cheese, because it already smells half sour when I buy it, rather than that mildly pungent smell.

All mayo is, basically, is egg yolks + oil.....but it's pasteurized - ie heated to a temp that won't hurt you.

It's a myth that it's the mayo that causes food poisoning in potato salad at picnics - the cause is really the raw veggies or meats.....

I used to laugh out loud that the suggestion that leaving the SHELLFISH salad in direct sunlight, in 80+ degree heat was dangerous because of the MAYONAISE!?!

sometimes ya gotta wonder about folks....
