Exercises for someone with lower back probs...

Havea friend who wants to get more involved with going to the gym, getting in shape etc...

He has a problem in his lower back...herniated disc...

What exercises does anyone know that would be good for backand or legs and would not cause very much pain or put so much stress on that area and still work the muscle?

Right now just guaging by looking at what hurts and what doesn't...if it is painfree i would assume it is alright.

So many people start doing the core lifts without ever thinking to bring up their weakest points first...

Your entire program should be focused on your weak points...with your weakest points being the most important.

When people speak of a herniated disk, we are usually dealing with a post-lateral herniation. Most of our spinal stress is placed on the front of the vertebral disks causing the nucleus pulposus to break through the annulus firbrosis on the back of the disk. You dont want to further aggrivate this and truthfully, any weight that you lean forward with will further herniate the disk. As for the comment about being painfree and ok... not correct. Cartilage is aneural and avascular so by the time you are feeling the pain, the lumbars in question are quite possibly touching one another... hopefully no nerve pinching is going on. I would consult a certified recovery specialist to help you through the recovery process. Disks are cartilage(avascular) and are delivered nutrients via diffusion through the bone, so remember they do not heal quite as fast.
 
It could be felt... the back is such a touchy thing to diagnose without scans. One of the worst things you can do with a disk issue, however, is moving while under pressure. I'll post a link to a diagram that might help u out... if i can find it lol
