Excruciating Back Pain

Last night I woke up at about 12:30 am with sharp shooting pains down the middle of my back. It was to the point where if I shifted my sleeping position, pain would fire down my back and it would feel like I got the wind knocked out of me; like somebody had just kicked me square in the back. Even though the pain originates in my back, I could (and still can) feel it right below my pecs on my chest. It is absolutely awful.

This is the second time I got this pain. The last time was about 2 weeks ago. I did deadlift very heavy this week, but that was two nights ago on Tuesday; and Tuesday night I slept like a baby. I took yesterday off from the gym. Also, I deadlifted last week and didn't have a problem. I'm wondering if it could be from the heavy shrugs I do. I'll usually put 405-455 on the bar and get 5-6 reps per set.

The pain is really hard to explain. I could do a deadlift motion, and a good morning motion without any problems but as soon as I would sort of twist my waist even slightly the pain would fire and leave me gasping for air. I don't understand.

If anybody has any input or common experiences I'd appreciate it.

Jim

PS: I use a double-overhand grip with wraps for the deadlift.

posterior serratus. usually happens in people with low transverse stability. the bar could have windmilled slightly on your deadlift and made it vulnerable.

I've had the same thing that lasted for 2 weeks after squatting a long time ago, I could hardly sit or breath.

I hurt my back last week as well but my injury is in my lower back, just above the waistline. I can feel the pain in between the vertibre and it's sore to the touch. I'm convinced I did it either when doing standing barbell curls or low rows. I didn't feel the pain until I woke up the next day so I'm not sure when exactly it happened. A lot of back injuries are cummulative so who knows. I went to my Doc and got a cortocose steroid (Decadron) shot and have been on celebrex for a few days. The shot and the celebrex has seemed to help and I'm easing back into things, although avoiding any twisting or bending. You might wanna try a major anti-inflammatory and or corticose shot, if you haven't already. They seemed to help alteast take the edge off.

Had it off an on for 2 weeks after doing a pretty yeavy Super Yoke (830 x 50'). Wife worked with some massage in that area an in areas surrounding, got an anti-inflammatory injection, lots and lots and lots of stretching, lots of warming up, and icy hot helped such a great deal.

Stay out of the gym, and get your ass to the doctor. you may have nerve damage, you may have a bulging disk.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I didn't go to the gym last night and relaxed at home instead. My back was ok (especially with the help of Vicodin) until about 4:00 am when I woke up in pain again. I walked around the house for a little, stretched out, popped a few Advil and went back to sleep.

I feel just fine this morning but I'm taking the off from the gym until Monday. Thanks again.
