Ever have to put a pet to sleep?

Just got back from the vet. Took my 12 year old cat. I get back from vacation and find out that she was sick while I was gone. I take her to the vet this morning and they find several knots all around her abdomen...like 10 or more of them. They kept her for tests and I am supposed to go and check on her tomorrow...and they said that it would probably be best to put her to sleep. She's been my baby since she was a kitten....found her on a beach in Florida.

Just wondering if anyone else on here has ever had to put down a pet that was like a child of yours...

I feel your pain completely. I put my baby of 8 years to sleep about 3 weeks ago.

There is a thread I wrote about it on this forum.

Sorry to hear that. I had a cat that was 17 years old and died of a heart attack a few years ago. Our family got her from the animal shelter when she was 6 weeks old.

I did recently. Our oldest Mastiff was starting to show her age. She was having trouble getting up and down. Then one day when I came out to see her she couldn't even get up. It hurt me to see her like that. She almost looked at me as if to say...I'm sorry. Well I took her to the vet and turns out that she had cancer...which had also caused severe dehydration. They tried to put her on fluids but she didn't respond so I had to put her down.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Thats what pets are to most of us. I had a dog when I was like 13 we had to have put to sleep. She was 8 and had a rare thing called wobbler syndrome.

im sorry to hear that :bawling: :bawling: i also have a cat and she is 8 years old and i have had her since she was a kitten and i cant imagine not having her around

Chameleon last month, pet of 1 year. Getting very sick with digestive problems. Used all available medicine and herbs and so forth to treat her, but nothing could stop it. Then her pancreas ruptured and her own digestive fluids began digesting at her abdomen. I couldn't watch that knowing the torture it must be. She was so sick and suffering as it was. Put her in a small box and took her out to the car, where I held her underneath the exhaust fumes. Took a few minutes but at least she went rather painlessly. Buried her in the backyard next to a rosebush. Kind of sad, I guess.

My cat was severely dehydrated so they could not run any urine tests on her for a few...they couldn't even get a urine return through a cath.

I am not worried about her being put to sleep if she is sick. She just doesn't act sick...she still chases my dobe around the house like she was 5 again. Just hard to think about comming home and her not being of my kids that runs to the door and demands attention.

Send her to 'The Satanic goat slayer' he'll look after your cat real good.

But really, I know how hard it is. I was told my dog had to be put to sleep a few years back. But as we had her for 18 year's, all through my childhood, we could'nt do it. We kept the poor creature through all her pain and discomfort for another few months untill she died one night in her sleep. But it was the cruelist thing we could have done, follow the vets advice please.

I was up late last night...and got up early this morning and took my cat to the vet. When I came home I took my 2 boys (dobe and blue healer) out in the back yard and played with them for an hour...and just loved on them as much as possible. My dobe is 11 and is getting older and is even getting grey hair and joint problems. Glad I have my little Jordan though...he is young and wirey.....I love to see the youth and carelessness in him.

Being a strong Christian...I have mixed beliefs...but I do believe that my kids will go to heaven and I will see them again someday. They have to. I figure that every innocent creature on this earth...especially the ones that I love...have to go to heaven...or atleast a place where I will see them again and get to hug on them all the time. Any thoughts?

Just got a call from the vet...they just put her to sleep.

I didn't even want to know what was wrong with her. They just said that they couldn't do anything for her...and she was in pain and was going to die. I just remember picking her up this morning...with a towel around her...holding her all the way to the vet...her in my lap looking up at me with those green eyes...driving along the back roads of Kentucky in my Suburban.

To think that that last hug I gave her at the vet...was the last I'll ever give her. My baby girl.

Holy Cow, I feel for you my friend. You got me all choked up here at work. People witll think I'm losing it. LOL. That is such a sad story. I have a dog that is a little over a year old. She was recued by my wife out in the country. She is like a spoiled damn kid to us. We spend our free time taking her to the leashless dog park. I can imagine how you feel. Just know that she is in a better place and that she will jump up in your lap when you're least expecting it in heaven....

I had to flush one of my fish's the other day. Man, I really miss that stupid fish and his stupid puckered lips.....(sniff,sniff) Sorry, I had to add some humor to this thread. It really sucks. I've had to put down a couple of dogs in the past.

She was my first pet. My family called the vet back. With her being 12...13 next month...ahhhhh.

her blood sugar was nearly 600 and normal for a cat was 200. Kidneys failed, no urine, etc.....

Thanks guys...and thanks for the card you emailed me...burst into tears when I read that. Thanks

When I was just a little guy, I had a doberman named Sampson. He was like my best friend, he gave me horse back rides when I was real little, and when I used to walk home from elementary he would run down the street when he saw me come around the corner , and walk with me the rest of the way. (My mom was at home and would let him out) He would also sleep right underneath my window (to protect me I think, or maybe the grass was just more comfortable there). Had to put him to sleep a couple of years ago. That was almost the saddest I have ever been in my whole life. well, good luck

When I was about 8 two of my dogs that stayed outside got into our house and ended up killing my cat that had been around before I was born so I grew up with him. Messed me up pretty bad seeing him gasping for air on the ground covered in saliva. Then about four years ago my parents had to put our 10 yr old dog to sleep b/c of cancer. He couldn't even get his hind legs up when he walked. It's amazing how much animals can mean to humans

damn, b fold. You can't get me all emotional, I'm at work.
I had a dalmation (Dice) for 8 years. He was more than a pet, he was a true member of the family. Words cannot describe this dog. His health was failing and there was little anyone could do. So my sister had it done. I live 2 hours away so all i got was a phone call. I hate to say this, but I cried harder and longer that night than I have at anyone's funeral.

Just put my dog to sleep about 2.5 months ago. I still miss her, had her 15 years. I also had to put my cat to sleep once after only having her for 12 years, they were both my little buddies.:bawling:

:bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

so sorry... i'll be so sad when it comes time for my lil guys to go, luckily i'll have years with them before that...

SORRY FOR THE LOSS BRO. I HAVE 2 BABIES AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT I OR MY WIFE WOULD DO IF THE VET SAID I HAD TO PUT THEM TO SLEEP. MY CONDOLENCES BRO.

B Fold, Sorry to hear about your recent loss. Last July I had to put down my Boston Terrier named Spunky that was 16 years old. I got her when she was 4 weeks old and could fit in the palm of your hand from head to tail. Her health was failing and it was the best thing to do for her. I'll tell you one thing tho, that was the hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life! I felt like a puss, a 26 year old guy being in the vets office crying like a baby as they put Spunky to sleep in my arms. I tried to make her feel as comfortable as possible on the way out, but let me tell you it was heart breaking! I could feel the moment when Spunky's heart stop beating as I held her in my arms and the drugs started to overdose her. Just think of it like this - Your animal will be in a better place waiting for you to get there. Good luck! PEACE

I grew up with our poodle, she was such a pretty little dog. :( We had to put her to sleep when she was 16, she had cancer. It broke my heart, it really broke my mom's heart. :bawling:

No matter how strange all this seems...it is more difficult to lose my little girl that I thought. When I got home from work tonight I had to throw out her litter box completely. I then cleaned up the shelf where we kept her food and water bowl. All of my dogs just sat around and looked at me so confused with their big brown eyes. I just began to think about all of the times when she was being rotten and would make us carry her across the room and put her up on the shelf so that she could eat when we knew darn well that she could get up there herself. When I slept with a water gun because she'd bite me all night...and when she was soaking wet....she'd curl up around my chest to go to sleep. Or when she'd bite my ankles when I walked down the hall if her food bowl was empty...and when I'd spank her with the newspaper..she'd just sit there and bite harder.

I found her on Daytona Beach when I was 11..eating lizards and drinking pool water. She'd come to no one but me...so our last day there..I grabbed her and threw her in our van. Took her all the way home to Kentucky...and she's been my girl ever since. Daytona...my girl.

The first day that I ever brought my 110lb dobe home...she ran to the door to greet me...and stopped almost all the way when she saw Isaiah. She looked at him and he snarled at her a few times. She took one step fwd and just sat there and looked at him. No claws or anything...and had the bluff on him even this morning before I took her to the vet to be checked out.

When I was sick a few years ago and almost died...spent a long time in bed with no friends to call or come see me because of the way that I looked and they were afraid. Daytona rarely ever got out of bed with me...ever. She stayed with me and was my friend when no one else would be. I got sick the other day and was glad to come home to see her...she even crawled across my dobe and blue healer just to get up in the bed next to me...made me feel so good and loved. What will I do next time?

It was hard to erase her things tonight from my home. Hard to go to bed tonight. So much stress right now that it is unbelievable...but Tona always made it feel so much better. I miss you girl....you are in my heart and I'll see you again...sooner or later.

Hey although I love pets I hope animals don't go to heaven (or hell) because there's nothing better I like than to take to rifle out and blast off a few. Oh and I love to fish also.

I have had to shoot a few. When it's time it is time. Not going to let any animal suffer. And as far as Bambi, just put her in my sight. We will be having venison for supper.
