ephedra illegal illinois

Gov. Blagovic(sp?) signed the law banning ephedra today. It's going to save a bunch of lives he says. Well, here's the article read if you're interested:

By BRANDON LOOMIS, Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO - As he signed the nation's first statewide ban on ephedra, Gov. Rod Blagojevich urged other states and the federal government to adopt similar bans.

Blagojevich was joined by the parents of a teenager who died of a heart attack last fall after using ephedra. The diet supplement has been blamed for nearly 120 deaths.

"It's a good first step but it's not enough," Blagojevich said of the signing Sunday.

Ephedra drew national attention after officials investigating the February heat stroke death of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect Steve Bechler linked it to a diet pill containing ephedrine, ephedra's active ingredient.

The herbal supplement is sometimes marketed as an athletic performance enhancer.

The drive for a ban in Illinois began last September with the death of 16-year-old Sean Riggins of Lincoln, whose father said he was taking the supplement to help make the first-string football team.

"We have to make sure that (young athletes) can no longer go to the store and buy ephedra as easily as they can chewing gum," Blagojevich said. The ban took effect immediately.

Riggins' parents, Debbie and Kevin Riggins, are working with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, in seeking a nationwide ban from the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites).

"With the signing of this bill today, we are the benchmark," Kevin Riggins said.

Earlier this month, nutritional supplement retailer General Nutrition Centers said it would stop selling products containing ephedra. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush signed a law last week banning the sale of all diet supplements to children under 18.

The American Heart Association (news - web sites) has urged a ban on ephedra sales, and the NFL, NCAA (news - web sites) and International Olympic Committee (news - web sites) have banned its use by athletes. The National Football League banned ephedra after the 2001 training camp heat stroke death of Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Korey Stringer.

State Sen. Barack Obama, D-Chicago, the ban's senate sponsor, thanked the Riggins family for pushing the bill.

"They turned their tragedy — the loss of their son — into legislation that is going to save the lives of many young people and athletes," he said.

Yeah, but you practically have to be fingerprinted and logged into the FDA base to get it,lol.

Since when? I bought some off the internet just like anything else a few weeks ago?.

Like so many other supplements that have proved both useful and safe for us, ephedra is soon to be illegal in U.S.

kinda sucks...

That's 120 'possible' deaths from ephedra in like the last 15 years

Allergic reactions to peanuts have killed more in that time

2 words from me...

BULL and SHIT

god dam these ignorant people, i personnaly have to thank ephedra for what it has done for me.

do not flame me for what i am about to say...

the kid who died from it more than likely overdosed didnt hydrate himself properly and went out and exhausted himself in hot weather. might as well put a gun to your head and pull the trigger itll be quicker.

i could be wrong, and if i am, then ignore what was just said, but it seems most epople who die from this drug OD on it

Ephedra will never make it to the point of being "illegal" nationwide. Federal gov't can come in at any time and overrule the state of Illinios (or any other state for that mattter). You will (or probably have) been noticing companies pulling ephedra based products off of their lists (hydroxycut, xenadrine, etc...) but this is because of the now outrageous liability insurance they must now carry. There will always be one or two gungho companies willing to carry it though. btw ABB just renewed their liability insurance on ephedra based drinks (speed stack, ripped force, etc..) for atleast the next 6 months...so no need to stockpile it just yet....

as far as the illegal issue, i think it's all bullshit- and I dont even want to state my arguement on this one. All I'm gonna say is that I'm using my pure 50mg ephedrine tabs before cardio or workout. that's that and I love 'em. :)

Why not? They made, speed, steroids and weed illegal. And ephedra is just a wimpier version of speed.

Exactly! If it cannot be patented by corps or if some idiot OD's on it then it will be banned. Look at the past. AAS where not illegal and GHB was sold at healthfood stores. Ephedra will be made illegal, it is only matter of time now.

Bastards!
