my parent's recently built a new house and had it wired for surround sound. anyhow, what kind of speakers do you guys reccomend they get? i know nothing about home entertainment shit, but i was thinking those little speakers you have mounted near the ceiling. does anyone know anything about any of this?

is the house completely built? I would recommend seeing a consultant if the house is not finished yet. if it is finished, how much are they willing to spend? how many people do they plan to entertain in that room? how big is the room? these are common questions that you should ask your parents before they start hooking it up with average components from the best buy. obviously, people want the best sound they could afford, so an important factor, is how much they would like to spend.

the house was finished in october. and the room they want to put it in is fairly large...and i dont know about # of people they entertain, cause when they have people over it's for bbq's or dinner/dessert. i dont think money is that big of an issue with them, but i dont think they need some super loud top of the line setup, they just need something pretty decent. my friend had some little bose speakers, and those things sounded great, and holy shit, did they get loud.

m&k makes good speakers
be sure to get a good receiver (im selling a Onkyo TX-DS898 dts, dolby,THX, its about the best kind u can get aat a circuit city or similar)
and use the expensive cables like supernav was saying

I would buy Klipsch if I were you.

They have great speakers.

If your looking for mounted in wall, or in ceiling speakers you could go with the RCR-5's or the RCW-5's

If your just looking for regular surround speakers I would get the RS-7's

I dont know if you have main speakers, center channel or a sub yet, but I would go with Klipsch for that too

theres a store in the short hills mall in NJ that specializes in home theaters. If price isnt a problem i would call them, maybe they have a store near you. I must say though that their shit is expensive but I doubt you will find anything better. I have a small room i went in to ask about (just for shits and giggles because i knew anything from that store would cost more than my car) and they wanted $13,000 to install everything..Thats not including the big plasma screen tv....That was another $8,000. Must be nice to be rich.

Yep Klipsch are nice sounding too. Point is don't try and save money in the speaker area. pOink, advise your parents to get the best speakers they can afford & stick with the same brand for front, rear, center and sub. front, rear, center should all be able to handle the same frequency range too & 2 subs are better than 1, especially for DTS.

Ideally your front and rear should be the exact same speakers with a kick ass center speaker (depending on the room it can be sometimes hard to mount big rears) .

Here's some speaker advice... do not go cheap. spend more money on speakers than on anything else in the system.

here's my brand of choice:

http://www.miragespeakers.com/

and this is what they're connected to:

sweeeeeeeeeeeet!

I will agree with you that mirage make good speakers. But I dont agree with the Yamaha receiver. If his parents have the money, and it seems like they do. They should be running it all through an AV preamp and a multichannel amp. I suggest using Anthem for this.
