enlarged heart

what cause the enlargement of heart is it just a side effects of steriod use period or is abuse or orals or what?

i had a friend i went to high school with he started juicing when was in high school and after a couple of years(3-4) he started having chest pains and when to the docter he had herrnia in his throat where it meets the stomach but they also discovered he had an enlarged heart and told him that he has cut 15-20 years off his life.

So out of all the sides of AAS this is the one i am not sure about so if anyone can shed some light on the subject?

I'm no expert, but from what I have read on here, they have found that the left ventricle is enlarged on a lot of steroid users, but they have found the same thing on marathon runners too, so there is no direct link that proves that steroid use enlarges the heart.

Being told you have cut 15-20 years off your life would be one hell of a blow though. Damn.

Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) can be caused from a number of things. Like was posted above marathon runners have been known to have enlarged left ventricles, this is usually due to thickening of the muscle and thier heart function is actually very good.

An enalarged heart (most likely diagnosed by chest xray) in itself doesn't mean much unless other testing is done, like an echocardiogram to eval the actual ejection of the heart itself. So unless that testing has been done, whoever told your friend he has taken years off his life has done him and injustice.

To answer your question, enlarged heart can be caused from defective valves, damage post heart attack, congenital abnormalities (genetics) just to name a few.

I strongly recommend you friend get a second opinion with further workup. Preferably from a cardiologist.

so you are say that an enlarged heart is really just the hardening of the muscle tissue not actual heart size and if that is not such a bad thing i wonder why they said that he knocked off 15-20 years off his life
