Hey gang, I had this posted in the endurance forum, and no hits for 3 days.

I am right now doing a lot of endurance sports. I can right now road bike for 60 miles, and run 6-8 miles at one given time. I am training for a triathlon which will be in May, so I have a lot of time. I am wanting to put weights back into my routine, but I don't know a good schedule to do that. Here is my workouts as of right now.

road bike 2 x per week
run 2 x per week
swim 2 x per week

I go mountain biking also, which I will do 2 times a week too.

Now I don't know where to put weights in, or if I should bother with it. I really only want to gain strength in my legs, but after a leg workout I am so sore I can't train run or bike for several days. So it screws up a whole day of training for me. I work out six days a week. For instance, this past week on Thursday I did a leg workout. It then screwed up my training on Friday and Saturday as I was too sore to do anything. Now after I get back into a routine of lifting, will the weights not effect me like they did this week. Any help would be appreciated from those who endurance train.

after reading your post, it sounds like you want to keep your cycling and tri training first, not wanting to train on sore muscles from the weights which will effect your cycle, or run performance...
first off, go to cyclingforums.com
this site, you'll get replies great cyclists.. world wide...tthe site we're on now, you get replies from weight trainers/bodybuilders, who may not know a lot about what your after..maybe for a few months you can lift wights for your legs. maybe dec-jan -feb, for your peace of mind, but if your goal is to be a good cyclist, or triathlete, you shouls train in those sports. i cycled for years. a quote from a danish pro. for 13 years he rode year round. 1 year he lifted a bit for his legs dec-jan, and said he hated it, as it took the suppleness of his pedal stroke away from him, and took a while to get the perfect peddal stroke back.

do strength training on the bike for stronger legs. power jumps, muscle tension intrvals are a few.
its up to you. you wanna be average at both, do weights and ride/run/swim. you want to improve in the cycling and running, do those.
not too many kenyans, morrocans, or etihopians squatting.. they run...not to many belgiuns or danes or french or italians squatting....they are riding...there again, not too many ronnie colmans training in tri's
its all up to you
all the best

Thanks man, that makes sense. That was what I was figuring also.

your comment is correct, saying he wont be sore anymore, but read what he's after.... to be a better cyclist/runner/swimmer. sure he wont be sore once he gets use to the weight training, but he'll have workouts not intense on the run and bike from the stress put on his legs weight training.
a bit of weight training is fine in my opinion, but you really have to know your body, not putting too much unwanted stress on specific muscles used for the cycle/run.
a weekend warrior, train the whole body.. an athlete good in regional races, train the race specific muscles..

Yeah if he wants to be a better cyclist/swimmer/runner there is no reason to do leg workouts. But I think he should still do them.
