"Marshall Mathers" sold two million copies within its first week of release. It is the fastest-selling Rap/Hip-Hop album of all time.

Marshall Mathers is also one of the highest selling rap albums of all time selling 17 million albums world wide since its release.


Name a rapper that has sold more albums and is better than Eminem.

Not sure but I think "The Score" by The Fudgees sold more.... a lot more. Chronic 2001 too.
 
Maybe change the thread title to " Eminem is on top in the money department" but saying he is the best solo rap artist based on flowage and lyricism is quite incorrect. peace
 
Eminem brought down the Van Ice Barrier. Kind of funny how when he linked up with Dr. Dre they marketed him with blonde hair. Brings us one step closer.
 
IMHO when it's all said and done Eminem will be remembered as one of the greats in the history of rap. While he might be the top money maker, I don't know if that is even correct though, he still can't touch Notorious BIG or Tupac yet. Those are without a doubt 1 and 2 in my book and the order is debatable.

Eminem is great though. And, as far as record sales, I would think that Jay Z, Nelly, Snoop Dog, Master P, and a host of other rappers are raking in a ton of dough and record sales to though.
 
I'm not much into rap, but Eminem's stuff is pretty neat. I like the way he finds ways to make things rhyme that don't seem like they should.

He's a clever bastard. Whatever his faults may be, you have to give him that.

"The Marshall Mathers LP" is the only rap album I've ever bought.

Thats because lately all of his shit is simply that...shit. "Pass the however you spell it"= crap. His fake jamaican accent on that new song of his with Sean Paul is also beyond gay. Busta is good and very skilled, but lately he has gone pop, and it sucks.
Eminem is skilled, but definitly not the greatest.
And Tupac was not the greatest. Personally i hate his shit, and think he is annoying as fuck and a little punk bitch. But i will admit he was good. Biggie was awesome. Nas is awesome. LLCoolJ is a fruitcake. MobbDeep is tight as hell. Wu-Tang is the shit as well.
 
Wu Tang is da shit too. Damn, can't believe I forgot them. Individually I like Method Man and Redman but like them all collectively as a group. Personally I don't care for Nas at all, but that's just me. Dre, Snoop, Easy, Biggie, Tupac, Eminem those are some of the tops in my book and their music has or will endure the test of time. Might as well throw the Click out there with B Legit and E-40, but, some of their shit has went down hill in the past few years IMO.

1) B.I.G. - No Question his mind was the greatest OF ALL.
2) 50 Cent - first album, the one with 17 songs. Also he has done a TON of mix tapes and some are unbelievable such as the one by DJ Kurupt called Paid in Full part II.

Speaking of DJ Kurupt this guy is good and puts out the newest songs (with remixes that are dirty as shit) way before they are radio play. He includes all the hot rappers like Nas, old Biggie, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Tupac, Snoop etc. He has Paid in Full Part III now with Busta Rhymes featured and the songs are way different than any radio top 40 Busta stuff. Good for all you Busta fans-I'm not one of them.

And how could i forget these guys, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, snoop Dogg, Outkast, Bone thugz. They are in the hall of fame for sure. Add those to the list of greats i listed above.

And for God's sake, if someone mentions Puffy, Sean Paul, or Nelly as greats, i will be forced to take a shit on my monitor in defiance of such a blatently retarded statement.

eminem is entertaining, nothing more. if you are a fan of his you probably only watch mtv and listen to the radio to determine your music preferences.


i listen to a ton of hip hop and the closest to mainstream i really enjoy is outkast and jay-z. andre3000 and big boi are creative geniouses. i got a lot more respect for them after i read the lyrics to 'mainstream'.


jay-z is solid too. he has a bucnh of songs that get mtv/radio play but all the ones you don't hear are the best. his lyrics are solid as anyone else's if you ask me. there's usually a metaphor in every line that takes some thinking to figure out but once you do all you can say is, "wow how does he think of that?" i read in vibe magazine that he doesn't even write down his songs. he thinks of 2-3 lines a day and remembers them in his head. once the song is complete he writes it on paper. i'm not sure if this is how he still does it but that was how reasonable doubt was done and that was his best album.

I think, since it's impossible for everyone to agree on one opinion, you can only judge one's popularity by the masses. Eminem's music has crossed borders and his tunes are catchy. His lyrics are, although repititious, very insightful and emotional. If record sales doesn' decide who's the best, what's a more fair way?!

Personally, I like Big but his really good songs have tons of background singers making the song, itself, more catchy. It's not his voice. Shit, you can barely make out what he's saying through the fat in his face. All his songs are about getting out of the ghetto and selling crack, anyways.

Jay-Z just tries to brag and prove how he's the best rapper. If you're hte best rapper, you shouldn't have to devote songs to it.

Tupac is alright but I wouldn't own his cd's. Em is the only person who i'd really buy all his cd's. It's not about being brainwashed, also. I never listen to the radio. His music just has a lot of "goodness" to it.

Have you ever heard illmatic? I'm sure you have if you've been listening since the '80's. Download that. I guarantee if Nas was white and his voice sounded like he hadnt hit puberty yet... you would love it and many other people would too. Listen to the lyrics on illmatic and the flow.. Eminem's lyrics suck and his flow is horrible...
 
I dont even feel like getting in depth right now, so I'll break it down for you short & sweet.

Eminem... greatest ever? - Not yet, but he's top 10-15 material

Biggie & 2Pac... greatest ever? - Not even close. 2Pac might make the top 30, but Notorius pretty much sucked.

Greatest group? - Either Wu-Tang Clan (props for originality & cohesiveness) or NWA (props for being a groundbreaking group & getting the West Coast into things)

Dont hate on Eminem b/c he's successful. Shit, the dude paid his dues a long time ago. Alot of his songs are great and of course thats 1/2 his lyrics and 1/2 Dre's beats (I still dont believe for a second that Em is producing his own shit, or if he is 'producing', Dre is programming everything & Em is tinkering around with buttons, but I cant complain, since I cant make my own beats either).

Sean Paul - Makes me want to decimate record execs... dont come at me with that weird bullshit. Dont really like Busta all that much either, but he's 25x better than SP.
 
part of eminems sale are due to his color. i mean im not detractcing from his emcee skills as he is definitly a good emcee but had he been black i dont think he would have sold as many albums. but credit must be given where due ..he is one of the best battlerappers out .

Your right! Alot of his sales are due to his color but he also sells many albums because he creates controversy and tries to push peoples buttons. I think he is a great rapper or he wouldn't be where he is now without his skills and determination.

I think the top MC's are Ice Cube, Snoop, Dre, Em, Wu-tang, and 2 pac.

I just read an article in Entertainment about how Eminem has virtually saved the waning music industry in terms of record sales. He's outsold everybody.

I believe he's extremely creative and has the ability to joke and utilize self-deprecating humor unlike many (any?) other artists out there. He discusses very personal issues and is interesting because of his character flaws.

I'm not sure he's the greatest, but he's certainly one of the greats.

I'd also include Ice Cube, DMX, the DOC, Eric B. and Rakim and NWA (collectively) to the greats list.

Plus he takes chances with his beats, its not all the same shit. And he does the super fast flow shit.. thats skill.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but the reason busta isn't there is more than likely because he DOESN'T deserve to be there. Just because you rap fast does NOT mean you are a skilled rapper, his flows are mumbles granted fast mumbles but mumbles none the less. If you are looking for someone who raps fast but is STILL CLEAR check out "twista" or "cap-1" both outta chicago. Oh and for all the people all over bigs nuts give me a break if he wasn't dead nobody would give a fuck about him anymore he isn't the most skilled nor even close to one of the most skilled mc's of all time he is decent at best but FAR from the best.

Here are some of their better songs: "Warm Embrace", "Dreams", "Legit Ballers", "Rock Yall Spot", "Motive for Murder", & "Mobstas Anthem"

As for B.I.G. and 2Pac... dying greatly greatly improved their fan base. The media ran way too far with their stories, creating new fans even though they were dead. California Love was probably Pac's biggest song while he was alive, and it wasnt even his song. It was originally a 3 verse song by Dre, they shortened it to 2 and gave one to 2Pac. Definatly agreed beefy most of tupacs fans came after he was dead and gone same with bigs. However I still think "All Eyez On Me" was the best double rap cd in history and its still a great cd even now. Anyone lookin for more twista shit look for his first album "adrenline rush" and download a track called "crook county" he just signed I believe a marketing deal with the roc and if kamakazie gets the push it should people will finally hear someone only the die hard rap fans know about. Peace.

Eminem is a good artist but when is the last time he dropped a cd up to the standard of Ready to Die and Makaveli: 7 day Theory?
 
all this talk of who is best and who isnt ..like KAYNE said its all a matter of opinion. one person might think eminem is the best, the next wouldnt put him in the top 30. my opinion differs a lot from the next guy on the street. and as for record sales, i guess its easier to sell records when you have song that goes mainstream pop and gets played on all the teenie bopper stations.

"Ugly" isnt Bubba's best song. It's probably "Kuntry Folks", a song on the promo release of his LP but not on the final copy (probably due to copyright shit)

So true, ppl keep on ignoring that fact that EMs songs get played way more on public radio than other rappers.

The other big factors are that he's white, creates a lot of controversy, and is actually pretty decent at rapping.
(he finds real creative ways to rhyme and he raps about more stuff than just gangs and hos, etc.)

Okay, now time to get some words in about the other rappers mentioned:

Notorious BIG? good? LMAO!! Whoever said he includes his thoughts/emotions in his song is messed up. He raps about nonsensical stuff like drugs, hos, gangs, etc. The only reason why he's popular is because he was shot (around the same time Tupac was too)

Tupac? yea he's good but I wouldn't say the greatest, his death helped give him a lot of publicity.

Jay Z? lmao, most people can't stand the guy. His beats suck, he raps over nonsensical babble, and he does nothing really thats that creative.

Then there's Dre. He has a cool voice and good beats, and everything he says flows together pretty well. His flaws though are that he doesn't have any meaning to his material and most of his stuff is pretty simple,
Snoop is also alot like him and has the same strengths and weeknesses,



So far I don't see any negative replies about NWA or Wu-Tang yet, so that must say something.

I agree that both biggie and tupac are very good, if not the best, particularily biggie. tupac was a great lyricist too, but people who say eminem isn't at least within their talent range is just being ignorant or stupid. he has more diversity than either biggie or tupac, and i have heard far more creative shit from him, and just because he isn't dead yet doesn't mean he can't rap with the best of them. i think most people who say he sucks or is no where near biggie or tupac just say it because they think he's annoying. that doesn't have anything to do with skill.
 
I prefer Mr. Lif. Eminem's technique of breaking quarter notes into eighth notes gives him a certain flair, but his lyrics are weak. They have no social conscience and read like a 10 year old whining about how nobody likes them.

First of all, record sales doesnt equate to #1 rapper status. Record record sales means that a rapper has crossed over, now kids in the burbs are buying shit.

The people that are know buying Em's product didn't buy nor did they listen to Rakim in the '80s or Public Enemy in the '80s-early '90s, NWA's in the late '80s, Big Daddy Kane, Tribe Called Quest, Too Short '70s,'80s,&'90s.

RAKIM was nice as fuck imo. Everyone in hip hop knows this fact. And he didn't get his rep by rapping about his momz or killin his girlfriend. Rakim is a pure lyricist - no gangsta shit needed, just skillz.

Yea, Cube, JZ, Nas, Face and Em are all nice but Rakim perfected the "flow" in the '80s. Even Em concedes that Rakim is among the best.

If you said this to me in person, I'd look at you like you were part retarded. Seriously.

1. Eazy-E DEFINITELY deserves props. Legend in the rap game. BUT... he rarely wrote his own lyrics and originally did NOT want to rap. He saw Rap as a money making venture only and Dr. Dre convinced him to rap the track "Boyz N The Hood". After its success, he became a full-time rapper instead of merely an investor.

2. Dr. Dre was part of a group called "The World Class Wreckin Crew" before he was with N.W.A. He definitely had "places to go". Eazy bailed Dre out of jail at one point and told him he'd pay him to make beats. They became good friends and then NWA was formed. Also, Eazy was never on the Death Row label.

3. 2Pac was not nearly as hard or talented as he and everyone else makes him out to be. His fan base is big because he got killed. He recorded a good 750 songs or so, and how many were good, solid tracks? 10? 15? Not very impressive. Biggie & Pac are VERY overrated. Its pathetic people think he's still alive.

4. You dont know shit about true gangsters.
 
There is nobody in hip-hop who's shit blows up immediately the way Eminems does, period. Do you like 50 Cent? Who do you think blew him up? Em and Dre. All he has to do is be in a song and it will be badass. I don't care what color he is, there is NO ONE out there that is more talented than. You might not like him because he is in your face and uses the shock factor, but you can't say he isn't a good rapper. I hate Michael Jordan, I'm fucking sick of him, but he is a hell of a basketball player. Eminem keeps coming up with original shit, his songs don't all sound the same. Even, arguably the greatest of all time, Tupac is very repetitive. He has about 10 songs that sound the same. Eminem is an innovator and a musical genius, like him or not. Obviously, if you don't like rap you won't like him. I don't like country so I would say Tim McGraw sucks, but to a country fan he is god. It's all about what you're into. It's entertainment, not church. Keep it in perspective.
 
My favorite MC of all time is Nas. My favorite rapper is Ghostface(used to be Scarface and Spice 1). Historical favorite is KRS-One.

It's so many angles you can take to the favorite rapper question. I'm just glad rap is around to enjoy. I like it. Some don't. I don't really like guitar noises. But Aerosmith makes some pretty damn good music. Put them up there with Prince and Stevie Wonder.

I want to hear what the Bay Area is all about. The best E-40 song I've ever heard was "Rep Yo City", where he rapped with a bunch of southern rappers.

E-40 is cool. Not that he is a good rapper, he's just cool to me. If I ever went to Valejo, I hope he would hang out with me. His cool songs to me were: Hurrican, Captain save a ho, Sprinkle me, and others that someone who is more E-40 savy could mention.

Do or Die-Everything off their first album is awesome. Twista is way better than either dude on do or die though. Now that he's with the Roc I hope that his talent is recognized by the general public.

I must say that em doesn't have shit on the bay rappers. Yah the boy can come up with some catchy lines, but so does Nickatina, and Savage C and many more. Em is a cute white boy which sells hella. All the middle class white kids are now hearing his songs and hes selling big, why because they have money. I know all the kids at my school have his cd's and know all the songs. But you go to frisco and listen to the shit they have and it blow you away. The beats knock, and people out here have respect for them. I must say that dude that went on about mac dre, luniz, smoov-e, e-40 got some good taste in music. He didn't give any love to cellski, 11/5, or NH. Check them out, its pretty sick
 
Eminem is good but im better than him when he was my age (17). I saw this special on BET which showed him rapping at a younger age. He rhymed the same word in every line. That's weak.

As for skill he isnt all that great anyway. Biggie was much better when it came to lyrics. Ya Eminem does rhyme i'll give him that, but sometimes his lyrics make no sense or one line is completely unrelated to the last one (even though it rhymes with it).

Example:
"You cant tell me shit about the tricks of this trade/Switch blade with a little switch to switch blades"

Now it may rhyme but it sure doesnt make much sense. He doesnt even make the transition into this rhyme very smooth. He goes from talking about his kowledge, to talking about blades.

I mean he has skill, but it's overrated.

2pac is not blac haze. I believe blac haze got shot for trying to pull that shit, suggesting he was pac by biting his style--calling his album Reshurecshun, that exit makaveli, enter blac haze shit, and all the other low shit he did.

Eminem might be in the top 5 of the best white rappers, but he's not the best. Aesop rock, slug, akrobatik are all better. Eminem is a bitch and will do whatever it takes to sell records.

His target audience is insecure dumbass teenagers (Teenagers who watch mtv, teenagers who aren't funny but quote movie lines inccorectly in a pathetic attempt to look funny, etc.) Pretty tough audience to get sales from that's for damn sure...
