Elite Gets ExistentiaL

Here is an opium-induced musing for you:

What is the deal with other minds?? I know the question is more or less pointless because there's really no way of proving that minds outside of your own exist......but holy shit....

....if you start to think about it for awhile it freaks you out...it's like the whole stupid "Are you dreaming right now?" question....and even though it's a stupid question - it's valid - because there's just no way of knowing 100%.....which brings me to ask - can we ever really "know" anything - and what the hell do we mean when we say we "know" something....

....people used to "know" that the earth was flat....but they were wrong - so did they merely "believe" it - and if so - what's the difference between "belief" and "knowledge"??

hmmmm - I fear I've gone off an a mindless tanget....my apologies!! But this has been freaking me out for a few days now....

I'm going to go and watch re-runs of the Wonder Years....Fred Savage makes the world seem more sane....

Good one. I'll ponder that for a while. I've actually been thinking a lot lately about reality. It seems reality really is a matter of perception. Know what I'm saying?

Ah! I know exactly what you mean!! Berkeley once said that "to be is to be perceived" - such that nothing can exist that is not perceived by some other thing....

...which is more or less the theory that material objects only exist because we "think" them into existence....

...so it's like the chicken and the egg - which comes first?? The material object, or the mind that thinks of the material object??

Well, I'm trying to wean myself off a bad caffeine addiction today, but I do grasp what you're saying. Even physical objects would not exist to us if we did not have the means to reach out and grasp them, see them, smell them, or whatever. This stuff can really drive you crazy if you sit around thinking about it, huh?

When I was a kid, I used to sit there and look at myself in the mirror... and think "That's me. I have my own personality... that is my face, my eyes, my hands... I am me." Sounds simple... but I got an odd feeling when I'd actually think hard about the fact that I am a person, with my own mind, and emotion, and one day, I will be dead. Or I am dead already, and this is my perception of the afterlife.

It's like those sayings:

"If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

Or:

"If you take a dump, and no one is around to smell it, does it make a stink?"

This one is particularly confusing, as if you're the only one around to smell your own shit... you usually don't think it stinks that bad. In fact, you don't really mind it. I don't know anyone who has been forced out of the bathroom by the smell of their own poop.

This thread started with the thought of perception and reality and now it is already at the smell of shit! I can't even imagine where this thread his headed next!

Sorry... that was my fault. An attempt at humor.

I think what Stryc-9 has posted is something we have all pondered in one way or another.

And when you get right down to it, it can really fry your brain.

Just the thought of actually existing blows my mind... and then to see I have children, who were created from my very body... that I love so dearly... who have their own minds, hearts, and souls... it gives me a headache when I get right down to it, and think about it seriously.

It's a good post.

I hope I have not corrupted it. I will delete my post if that's the case.

Oh c'mon. I made one crack because the opportunity presented itself. Back to the question at hand- any other comments anybody?

No, no....don't delete your post. Shit, I thought it was hilarious! If you delete your post it will fuck up mine.

WORD OF ADVICE:

DO NOT try and contemplate this sort of thing while tripping on shrooms. You will ultimately blow your own ego out the window and wind up a bubbling sack of mindless flesh laying on your bathroom floor for a few days till you slowly put the pieces of your own reality back toegether into a new form to coincide with your newfound realizations.

Now if you just want your brain to start hurting a little and get a tad bit paranoid, then contemplate this while high on weed.

she's usually referencing something in pop culture, or in the snobby art/literature world, so if you don't know what it is, then it will seem out of nowhere

Thanks for clearing that up! I thought maybe she was trying to reach 10,000 posts before midnight!

while on shrooms, I happened to be taking an astrophysics class during that time... so I had some very interesting thoughts.
they were interesting to me, but not to those around me.

and then I tried to explain some cryptography stuff to someone, but when I started writing, I had to much trouble b/c the lines were running around on the paper...

then I got "stuck to the floor" and explained torus manipulation (surface topology math) while they threw penuts at me.

that was a very surreal 8 hours...

I tend to get philosophical whilst chasing the dragon...

...but nobody has ever thrown peanuts at me....that's just rude!

Another thing that interests me but tends to bore everyone else is the potentially disturbing paradox of self-reference in language....for example:

"This sentence is false."

If it's true - then it's false. Which makes no sense....

just like HS has a little peeper... as drizzt would say, "i seen it"

:D

semiotics is really interesting to study.

high five, more dead than alive.

you'd like philosophy, math (logic likely), physics, and comp sci if you like that stuff.

my foot hurts.

DISCLAIMER: I have nothing against Smalls

So am I, but there's a time and a place for everything. And being able to quote "The Big Lebowsky" or other priceless little gems from pop culture does not mean you're educated. I'm not saying you aren't, just saying it doesn't.

-Just thought I'd share.

in smalls defense - I don't think the big lebowski references were supposed to be smart in any way...

but then not in her defense - she posts waaaay too much.

me on the other hand? perfect.

I get paranoid contemplating the shade of my jeans while I'm high on weed.

you will learn much from studying with me, my son

wax on wax off

Ha ha ha. You make me think of the little kid who's listening to the grown-ups have a conversation, and is so eager to be included that she keeps interjecting completely inane comments. Finally, the adults pretend to be interested, in hopes she will shut up.

rene's mom was raped I think in his youth and he saw it and then was very introverted after that.
he had a very weird thing with the female form and water...

haven't read about it in awhile, so I could be wrong.

don't ask me, i've never studied him. well, any of it was just images i would cross reference with mark tansey.

i have meant to read up on him.

Kierkegaard and Heidegger can kiss my ass! Ludwig Binswanger is ok for a Euro! But Rollo May is just wrong!

sartre, my dear

i liked that show he was in.. sartresky and hutch (old saturday night live from xmas 1977 - anyone?)

i crack myself up. alone, that is.

I havn't read any of the posts in this thread. I think it has something to with perception of reality or something, but waaaahterver.

I knocked back a couple sohts of absinth about 1@2 hour ago, so I'll be ready to answer any and all questions about the untiversse shortly.

In the meantime, ponder ICE CUBE: Life ain't nothin' 'cept bitches and money.

Now thta's deep.
