Elite Fitness logo

I'm a graphic designer and went to school for it and shit, but for the life of me, I can't figure out the significance of the EF logo. I mean, it could be an abstract "IA" or "M".. but thats stretching it. Is it the OG Mass Q logo or something?

Someone enlighten me.. its making my brain hurt.
