Eight Dead Bodybuilders in the Southern United States in the past year!!

I think we need to see the cause of death before we dismiss this as BS. Although 8 out of 11,000 doesnt seem that bad, I would like to know how they died, their ages, etc before I can just say BS!!

I mean if they all died of suicide, I would be very interested. If it was dio to abuse, again, very intereted. If it was heart related and they were young...I think you see where I am going with this,

Although 8 doenst seen like a lot, I think the cause should be the factor.

I still haven't read the magazine yet, I'll maybe go today and get it but I know one guy did die due to a stressed heart and he was in his early 40's. He was on juice all the time and had some pretty big dosages.

If it's not too much trouble can you show me the evidence of that?
Then if you don't mind, can you show me evidence that short term changes in lipid profiles lead to CAD?
This magazine only writes about amateur body builders, not pros. The athletes who are featured in the pages of this magazine would not fit the description you've written there as "Hard core BBers use large doses for long periods of time and many never come off."

I didn't read the artiicle. But just because they are amateurs doesn't mean that don't use large amount of steriods for long periods of time. About 6 months ago, I guy we know had a heart attack. He lived. But he admitted to using steriods for 20 years. While he didn't say how much. The dude was pretty big and I doubt he that way by doing a couple small each year. This guy was on year round. Now I can't that his heart attack was caused because of AAS. But there are alot guys out there that are long-term heavy AAS users and they don't compete , amateur or otherwise.

In my first reply I mentioned that large amounts of steroids can have a negative impact on cholesterol levels and having negative cholesterol levels have been linked to heart disease. Do you know feel that there is substantial evidence linking cholesterol levels to heart disease? I can't prove that a small cycle leads to HD. But I can't prove that smoking one cigeratte a week will cause problem. But we know that cigerattes smoking is linked to HD and cancer.

Again, I have no idea if any or all of these were caused from AAS? That is not my point. The media puts out a message that may lead you to believe that AAS was behind the deaths. I think this is irresponsible unless you have some evidence that would substantiate this. But I think it is equally irresponsible for people to dismiss the possiblility that steriods could be a factor without any information.

So, I work in Cardiology and see people have heart attacks all the time and for various reasons, young and old. Youre making huge leaps with your assertions. Cholesterol profiles can be controlled regardless if youre taking AAS and should, that is if it actually does affect a person's cholesterol.
Also steroids can cause the heart to enlargen but from what Ive seen it tends to return back to normal LV wall thickness or normal limits of a athlete's heart. Now if it stays thickened as it might if people have uncontrolled hypertension that can also be caused by aas then it can lead to congestive heart failure over time. Again, that happens to people all the time not on aas.
High blood pressure can also change the structure of the arteries making them less elastic and can contribute to stroke and plaque rupture myocardial infarcts.
The problem with all of this is that happens to many many people so b/c it happens to someone thats taking aas does not prove causality. THe research is not exactly clear on all of this although the mechanisms are sound in hypotheticals but only when the symptoms are situation matches. Basically, irregardless of aas use a person should follow proper medical advice and make sure their bloodwork and BP are within proper limits as matter of smart and good health. Drugs shouldnt be abused and I am sure that there is evidence of damage b/c of that, but overall I think the data of reasonable use of AAS is suggestive that in perspective of other drugs that they are relatively safe if done properly and I stress properly.

brothbill, Most the reasearch into the morbidity tables of the athletes using AS are comparable to the general population. The only difference seems to be the LV enlargement but that is the same in powerlifters who don't use AAS. So it may be a result of weight training. Either way just take some Cialis or Viagra on a regular basis and your AAS heart problems are solved. At least in animals. :)
