Effects of alcohol, explain or post urls

I am doing a health project where I will be putting up posters around my high school about binge drinking/underage alcohol use. I don't want the same old posters we all see everyday, so I came here :) since it's geared toward high schoolers and many of them want 'great bodies', use alot of alcohol, etc. I think this board was a great board to request urls, or effects on the body at. Please post or explain:

both long and short-term effects-
symptoms of abuse, signs-
legal ramifications-
effects on an unborn child-
statistics-
or anything else you deem important.

Dont' get me wrong here, I'm not asking you to do my homework, that would be nice haha :), but I'm already about 2/3 the way done with it all, but just wanted to see if I missed anything from all the fitness head's perspective.

The main thing is if any of you can post some urls or even minimum input that would be a great help, thanks!

Are there any Law enforcement officers here?

Well, I'll tell you this, a 2 month drinking binge and being off my diet, along with a lack of exercise put about 15lbs on me. 15!!!!!!!!!!

Its not worth it heheh.

What effect does Alcohol have on the bodies ability to digest carbs, protein, and fat?

From what I can gather it sort of cuts in the line of the metabolization process and when it is consumed is metabolized immediately, meaning if the alcohol consumed was all that was needed to supply the body's current energy needs, whatever else was in your system at the time has a very good chance of getting stored as fat or excreted.

"Although Flintstones vitamins probably do not impact T, many recreational, prescription, and OTC drugs do. Lets start with everyone's favorite drug, alcohol. In my opinion, alcohol is the single best legal Testosterone suppressor known to mankind. And you don't need a biochemistry experiment to realize that. Just look at the physique of any alcoholic for the evidence. And not only do chronic alcoholics suffer from low T as a result of sippin' a cold one. Numerous studies have shown that even one night on the town can cause T levels to plummet.

In one particular study, men consumed the equivalent of giving 200 ml of alcohol to a 176-lb man. While intoxicated, T levels were 25% lower on average than before consumption. In addition, the time course of T decrease correlated exactly with blood alcohol so when blood alcohol was the highest, blood T was the lowest.(17) With even lower doses, T levels remained suppressed for 10-16 hours, even after blood alcohol returned to normal.(23,24) "

Yes, there are :).

Who, then, should I ask about legal ramifications for drinking under the age, DUI's, and the such? or would that person happen to know the official law enforcement agency's sight? :D

Well, I can probably help you out with that part. I'm a graduating senior in Criminology (Criminal Justice essentially) and I interned with the United States Secret Service for 6 months. And no, most (come to think all) cops I know don't care about steroid use :p

Underage drinking, for the most part, isn't taken as a big deal for MANY cops. If you’re out back in the back of the school, or in your front yard, etc. You’re going to get it confiscated and a phone call to your parents (and a good chewing). Now, underage DUI is a TOTALLY different ball game. Here in Alabama you can lose your license for up to a year including court costs that can run anywhere from $800-2000 (court fees, fines, and the like). If you're ever charged with one, GET A LAWYER. It isn't worth the felony on your record and many times a decent lawyer can get it knocked down to wreck less driving. DUI is seen as a HUGE deal here at Auburn University, but this is a college town and it's a pretty widespread practice compared to a lot of places.

The only thing that might save you from a felony record with underage DUI is in fact your age. But plan to lose that Driver's License for at least 6 months, possibly a year (3 months to a year if you’re of age). Of course, the more DUI offenses you accumulate, the harsher the penalty. Eventually they will pull your license forever.

I'll just add that alcohol actually INCREASES testosterone in females....for better of for worse.

There appear to be absolutely NO health benefits to drinking alcohol for anyone under the age of 35-40. After that, there seems to be some protective properties from drinking alcohol in moderation. Binge drinking is very unhealthy at any age. It's stupid, dangerous, expensive, makes your dick limp, men sprout breasts and end up feeling like watching sports and sex instead of participating in these activities. But honestly, a poster is not gonna make any difference to kids at risk for binge drinking IMHO.

Thanks KWK and MS for your input,

MS: I agree with your statement about posters doing nothing, but it's my final :( I wish I could do something more productive than this, being as I feel you're 100% right. Can you explain the moderate drinking's protective properties?

Thanks again guys!

Binge drinking=bad no matter how you break it down. Causes deficency in all body nutrients. Drinking is also catabolic.

In regards to drinking under 35yrs old. I love a glass of red win with red meat. For me and alot of humans it helps break down the ingested food. Meaning a huge meal you usually feel bloated eating with a glass of red win I feel full not bloated and recover faster.

DUI/DWI here in VA you can bet you WILL loose your liscence for a year. Pay court costs. Go to AA meetings. Go to driving school. And possibly go to outpatient treatment counseling. Insurance scy rockets.

That is just if you ARE of age!!!

Basiclly underage DUI/DWI your screwed!

Now I am no saint! I got my first DUI (yup i said first so this is all first hand) when I was 16. Back in those days (14 yrs ago) it was driving school, and 200.00 fine Second when I was 18, 500.00 fine driving school and 5 AA meetings. Third when I was 24, lost liscence for 3 years, drug counseling 3 times a week for 5 months, 25 AA meetings, driving school. Total fines etc with lawyer came to around 8 THOUSAND dollars!

It took me the hard way to grow the hell up!!! But I have and feel 10000000% better about myself and who I am.

Moral of story: Drinking and driving will ruin your life!!!

:) have a good day!

I didn't mean to sound like I was dissing your poster project crayonofdoom. An assignment is an assignment :(

The moderate drinking thing appears to be related to how our livers age. Below the age of ~40, our liver usually has an ideal balance of 'holes' to take up fats from the blood stream and portal vein. Drinking (in moderation OR excess) tends to enlarge these holes, making the liver less efficient. However somewhere after the age of 35-40, the holes in the liver become smaller and don't work as well. Alcohol (in moderation) dilates these holes to their youthful size and function. At any age, binge drinking will demolish the liver holes altogether rendering it totally unable to do it's job of removing fat. And as Only1eagle points out, binge drinking has a host of other metabolically devastating effects.
