can you guys offer me some advice on putting an item up for auction? is ebay the best sight to do it on? it is a sports-related item that should fetch several hundred dollars at a minimum.

are there any tricks of the trade, such as setting minimum bid, choosing or not choosing certain options for the way the auction progresses, or things to do to protect myself, etc???

all advice welcome. thanks.

never sold anything on there, but i have bought a ton. You can set a reserve price at the absolute mininum that you would take, and start the bidding there. I have never understood why people set a reserve at like $250, and start the bidding at $5.

Was a huge seller of sports memorabilia on ebay. If you can Pm me what the item is or a picture would be even better I can help...

There are tons of factors you have to take into account, not all that I can list here. I will help if I can.. 1 of the biggest keys is Timing, another is rating, a third is verbage and auhtenticity. I can help in these area and dozens more..

on a 3 hundred dollr item i have seen it make as much as a 200 dollar difference... No shit

Some of my observations:

-Auctions with reserves don't get bid as high.

-Auctions that start the bidding too high don't get bid as high

-Auctions ending on Sunday or around lunchtime during the week get higher bids. Keep in mind multiple time zones and target that. Don't have your auction end at 11PM PST on Sunday, that's 2AM EST.

-People seem more comfortable buying from a person then from a business. Let the people know they exact condition, any defects and why your selling it. Be friendly

-If you don't have any feedback, don't bother. Sell some little shit first to build up your feedback and gain some reputation. That or find someone with some reputation to sell it for you.

-Charge a reasonable shipping and list how much it will cost to ship.

-Accept paypal. Personally, I won't even bid if they don't take paypal. It's too much of an inconvenience for me to go get a MO.

Ask a couple of trusted friends to register on Ebay as users and occasionally ask them to Bid up the price a few $'s..

Lower prices turn up higher on search results, hence more looks at the item. Ebay's prices beside the auction name on search listings are often not up-to-date. It could say $5.00 while the bidding is actually at $115. When you clicked on the item's page, it'd say $115, but in the search results, it stays for a long time. That means those people that search for "list cheapest items first" will still see it at $5. This method does work.
