Ear wax?

I've had a few doctors recently, when checking my ears, mention that I have some decent build up of wax in my right ear. 2 questions:

1) what the hell is the proper way to avoid this (apparently q-tips are not the way to go, which I have used daily for years and years)

2) anyone have experience with any ear wax removal kits? seen many at the drugstore, but wanted to see if anyone has used a particular brand.

every doc I have ever spoken to has told me that q-tips do more damage than good.
