Dynamics of weight lifting---increase weights or decrease.

Sometimes I begin at 80%-90% or so and move to lighter weights. Other times, i will progress up to my max instead. I like to change it up, as I find there to be different advantages to both. Is there a fundamental difference between these two methods? how do they compare in so far as the dynamics of muscle developement?
