Usually considered the best in the business by audio and video professionals.

Seriously? I'd never buy a Plextor...seen too much funky stuff with them.

IMO, the externals are usually more finicky and create more coasters than the internals.

I've got a Memorex...I had one defective, but once I got that exchanged, no more problems. No experience with externals though.

Gonna use on a laptop so internal not really an option _ I was thinking about one of the new standalones that can be hooked up to tv

What kind of funky stuff with the Plextors?

In general, they were finicky...wouldn't detect on some systems, buffer underrun problems, mysterious errors when burning...that kind of thing.

CD or DVD?

I've had an old Plextor 4/2/20 SCSI CD-RW drive since the late 1990s, it's been flawless all this time. No one I know with a Plextor has ever had the problems you listed, and top audio pros in Nashville and LA insist on them for casual CD duplication because of their low error rates when compared to other burners.

CD, but these were internal IDE drives.
