Ducks in my yard - Part 2

****WARNING**** post on this thread at your own risk. there is no telling where it will head and turn out.

Ok... are they like birds? You know if you touch a baby bird or the eggs, the mother will abandon them because of the human scent that remains on them. Is this true with ducks?

I don't want to touch them, but I need to get them out of my flower bed because the lawn maintenance is coming tomorrow to spread out weed killer along the community. That might not be a good idea if they ingest any.

Maybe if you use latex gloves and try to pick the eggs up with soil underneath so little or no scent gets on them it could work. A vet or animal shelter could be a good place to take them where they could be raised and then released, but mama would be sad. Fuck it. Weedeater.

Catch the mother with them and the babies and take them to a local lake. Put them all in a trash can, if you don't catch the mother they are fucked. Get the mother first bc she can fly, use a net or a blanket. Be careful. Used to work in a pet store. Birds are easy to hurt so when you put them in the trash can be careful. Use the blanket to wrap around the mother to catch her. Dont touch the babies with your bare skin.

She should be easy to catch... she hasn't moved all day. Just her head. I went out there and put out some oats and water and she has eaten quite a bit of that, but nothing else. I can't even tell how many babies she has.

I few some more shells back in the bushes with her, but can't count them.

Also, it has rained most of the day - which is good, but I fear when the sun comes out tomorrow, so will the cats.

Get them tonight then. Put them all in a trash can and take them to a local park or wooded area with water and bring some oats and water and she should be fine. Are there only eggs or babies? If there are eggs be sure to not turn them over and put them all in a towel. If you turn them over they may not make it. If they are babies just pick them up with a towel. Make sure you use an old towel that hasnt been washed because the detergent smells like a foreign smell and themother might not go back to them.

I don't think there is a problem if you touch the eggs or the babies with your hands. If she won't care for the eggs after you touched them then maybe you can look after them until they hatch. Sit on them ;)

:lmao: @ the idea of AAP sitting on a bunch of eggs to keep them warm ;)

Hmm, I'm really not sure about this one. I agree with whoever said to try and move the mother with them... maybe a vet would have a better idea?

dont touch them and try to keep the insecticide stuff away from the ducks if u can......she will abandon them if someone touches them

I did not know that ducks abandoned the eggs or babies because of the human scent. Oops. My aunty had ducks and I used to touch the eggs and the babies and the mother always came back to look after them.

Are we talking about a wild duck here? ;)

I have always heard that if the eggs or babies are touched, the mommy wont come back to them....
I know this is how it is with some animals....

My family has always dealt with that situation with fireworks. Not to hurt them...but to discourage them

If nothing else couldn't animal control help?

These are wild ducks that stay on the lake behind my house.

I am getting attached to these things. It is raining here and a bit chilly and I have been out there twice since returning from dinner to see if they were still there.

I don't know. They have hatched and I can't tell how many there were. Most are in the bushes behind her where I can't see. Unless I want her jumping in my face and hissing at me. (I don't).

Are these like 'normal' ducks, like mallards, or those godawful Muscovy ducks -- look like the spawn of a turkey vulture & a mega duck on roids?

:lmao:

That would be quite a sight though... I bet the ducks are really cute.

I think the Muscovy kind. The mother is big. Like a basketball. Black and white feather. Red something or other on her face. Fearless as hell. When I was out there putting out the food, she stared me down like she was going to kick my ass until she found out I had food.

I once heard a neighbor say this breed of duck was protected by the Gov't because the only place left in the world they reside is in FL.
