DSL modems

hey all............I have 2 computers and 2 dsl modems......How can I keep both of them pluged in with only 1 dsl account? As of right now I have to unplug one computer for the other one to work.
Is this a software fix, or do I need a router? I do not want to connect the computers up via NIC cards. I have seen software like "modem share", but that requires you to network the computers.

I was going to say connect them through parallel networking but yeah, a router would do. I wonder what would happen if you were able to splice the original connector into 2 seperate ones like with phone lines...interesting experiment to try at college considering I dont pay for anything, hehe.

Router... or Cross-over cable with direct-connect --- XP does this almost automatically.

get a router. its got a built in firewall so you dont have to worry about someone hacking your computer. make sure the router that you get is dhcp. this means that you wont have to go through and assign IP address or subnet masks. all you'l need is the router, a patch cable to go from the router to the first computer and then another patch cable to go to the other computer. might i recommend the Linksys 4 port router with built in switch. very good quality router.

Thanks for the help all. I was trying to avoid running cables through-out my house. Right now I have to unplug my modem from my computer and plug in my sons modem otherwise none of them work. I quess one modem see the other and will not dial out. I can plug the dsl modems into any jack within my house. Was just hoping that there was some type of software that will allow 2 modems to share 1 phone line.

You don't need a friggin' router.

Buy a 15 dollar 5 port hub.

Hook both up to the DSL modem.

Go to the XP machine that has the network connection, go to the network connection properties: click on advanced, then choose Advanced, you'll see an option that says, "Allow other machines to connect to the internet through my this machine." Enable that.

Too much...too much...:bawling:

Well, there are benefits to having a router. I'm assuming it's configurable and the OS is updatable, which are the two benefits.

Oh, and it pulls less amperage.
