Drugs for narcolepsy

A friend of mine can't sleep easily. Sometimes she doesn't sleep for 2 days and finally sleeps in the afternoon for just about 6 hours. I told her she should see a specialist and fix the problem, but she asked me if I knew what kinds of drugs exist to treat the problem/symptoms.

Thus, here I am posting on C&C.

What drugs are used to treat such problems and how do they work?

insomnia and narcolepsy are almost polar opposites...

the ones that her doctor will prescribe her, usually sleeping aids.

by the way, they are trying to get the government to approve GHB for narcoleptsy since they cant seem to treat this disorder

Well, I am encouraging her to see a specialist. But it is useful to be educated on the commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals before going to a specialist.

Anyone take anything for insomnia?

If she has insomnia it could be stress related. does she also have anxiety, depression, or stomach problems? If so she should try to find some stress relieving tactics. I used to fall asleep at 6-8am everyday for 3 years straight, after i fixed my stress i started falling asleep at 1am.

Also, talk to atlantabiolab about narcolepsy drugs as he has this condition and does alot of research on supplements to take to deal with it.

Ambien and Sonata have become very popular for insomnia. I have taken them myself and they work very well, without the foggy morning syndrome.

Modafinil would be used in the case of narcolepsy, btw.

Yea, ask for Provigil from your psych/phys therapist - it is used specifically for narcolepsy. Cheaper alternative would be Adrafinil, but I'm not sure it's FDA approved. Dexedrine/Desoxyn would be another alternative - but you better bring flowers to an appointment to molest your MD since many docs are skeptical of prescribing amps. Mebe adderall, xoxo.. :o

She definately does not have narcolepsy. Insomnia is more likely and the more common treatments use GABAergics, such as Sonata or Ambien, as others have mentioned. They are short acting sedative/hypnotics that have lower risks of grogginess.

Some have used melatonin successfully, even though it is not a sedative, it seems to cause the onset of sleep, but does not keep one asleep. Kava and valerian extracts also have been used to initiate sleep, both have some GABAergic properties.

hey, plornive. before anything else, have this person go to a sleep center and have a polysomnogram run, aka ''sleep test''

and for sure ambien over sonata. less grogginess. also dont let some idiot give her 10mg tabs at first. try 5's.

She desires drugs but doesn't want to see a doctor?

Has she tried marijuana?
I have, but she lives with her parents and is afraid of the stigma attached to smoking weed. I would give her some of mine but I ran out and have since decided that weed is a waste of time.

She is definitely retarded for not being willing to see a doc. I thought I would pass her some information anyway.
