drug sniffer at post office

Just saw a news story on our central post office. All the packages run through this machine doing like 50mph and the thing sniffs for drugs and chemicals for bombs etc. I dont think it is picking up the smell of AAS

Thats interesting. How the hell does a machine smell? Does anybody else know anything about this?

I've seen several reports on these machines too, especially to be used in airports for security. THe machine smells by blowing air over the packages or person or whatever to blow off loose particals and then a sensor picks up if certain particals are found in the air. Just like how a person smells but it usually only checks for certain compounds... But who knows it might be designed for bombs and narcotics but I don't think it would be too hard to include AAS in there list of compounds to respond to.

Ya no way they can pick up gear. I'm sure they could specify certain blends, but there are so many UG products that it would be like dog chasing it's tail.

if your talking about the new machines they have in post offices that the package is squeezed thru, it is specifically designed to pick up anthrax. the first one was put in tucson's post office that is why i know this.

it test the air particles more for explosive/anthrax type marterials I don't think it detects small amounts of liquid in glass vials

the only way that it will pick up smells is if your ug lab is doing drugs on the side and there's some residue on the package..

that would suck!
