Dr's miss diagnosis
BMA boss has sex change
By Lewis Panther
A TOP doctor is having a sex swap—to become a woman.
Dr Stewart Drage, a joint boss of the British Medical Association, stunned colleagues by confessing he has been secretly DRESSING as a female.
Now he is becoming one—and will be called Michelle. The father of three will undergo a two-year hormone course, then an op to complete the transformation.
Stewart, 51, says he has the full backing of his wife of 27 years, Joanna, and three grown-up sons, and he remains at the family's home in Wembley, North London. He said last night: "My family, friends and employers are supportive. It is an unusual situation but it happens."
He said dealing with 7/7 casualties in 2005 convinced him to change sex. Dr Drage, who began hormone treatment that year, said: "I thought if people can die just walking down the street, how can I not allow myself to be the person I need to be?"
Dr Drage is a GP in Shepherd's Bush, London. He is also joint head of doctors' union the BMA in London. Yesterday he broke his secret to thousands of doctors across the capital in a shock letter. But he first came out at a top-level meeting with BMA chiefs.
But a BMA spokesman said: "Stewart has the full support of his employers. He has been open and frank."
