drinking while dieting/juicing

I rarely drink..if I wanted to go out tonight.. Before I go any further, I'll tell you I know beer is definately out of the question because of calories. But would 3-4 shots of vodka hurt my diet? Right now im on 500mg (just upped it this week) of enanthate, and im dieting, trying to tighten up. I haven't cheated on diet, do u think a couple shots of Vodka will hurt? I heard clear liquors have less cals... but gimme some opinions...

Depends what you are dieting for and your overall goals and how "hardcore" you are. Personally bro I "cheat" every now and then. Shit we gotta live too you know. Right now I'm not going to for a while though. Well I will cheat on shit food still here and there but drinking is out for now. Only the most hardcore I know never drink or do anything "fun." If you are dieting for a competition than I say don't do it. If it is still far away then maybe you can but don't get into the habit of it. It's up to you. 3-4 shots personally isn't shit and I know this summer once I've already leaned up as much as I want you can bet your ass on the weekends I'll be going out and drinking. Like I said, we gotta live to you know. To each their own bro.

Vodka does not have less calories, that is a myth. Hard liquor and beer have roughly the same calories. I have heard of that new micalobe ultra that supposidly has like 2 carbs in it, and like 90 calories but who knows of the alcohol content, it could be like 1%

yea bro i am on and i was wondering the same thing, if i should drink a little tonight i know you shouldn't make a habit of it but this is one night...... should it hert your gains.......

Beer is bad, but mixed drinks like Martinis, Screwdrivers, Sex on the beach are the absolute worse. we are taking 300-600 calories a drink

Beer has 150 calories.

I beleive a shot of vodka has 80 cals.

Martini's? I guess if they have a whooole lot of olives...:p

Michelob Ultra has 2 Carbs. and 95 Calories. It has 4% alcohol which is more than Coors Light or Bud Light.

Alcohol has about 9 Calories Per Gram.

If you are in a situation where you feel you need to drink, I would suggest sipping on a good vodka (like grey goose) and diet tonic water. 4 or 5 of those and you will feel good and be under 400 Calories - with almost zero carbs. Also alternate vodka/tonics with water to avoid the hang over the next day.

Alcohol calories
Successful weight loss is all about oxidizing (or burning), more calories than you eat. When they go on a diet, many people choose low-calorie alcoholic drinks, mainly because they contain fewer alcohol calories than their regular counterparts.

However, this recent study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows that even a very small amount of alcohol has a large impact on fat metabolism.

Eight men were given two drinks of vodka and lemonade separated by 30 minutes. Each drink contained just under 90 calories. Fat metabolism was measured before and after consumption of the drink. For several hours after drinking the vodka, whole body lipid oxidation (a measure of how much fat your body is burning) dropped by a massive 73%.

Rather than getting stored as fat, the main fate of alcohol is conversion into a substance called acetate. In fact, blood levels of acetate after drinking the vodka were 2.5 times higher than normal. And it appears this sharp rise in acetate puts the brakes on fat loss.

A car engine typically uses only one source of fuel. Your body, on the other hand, draws from a number of different energy sources, such as carbohydrate, fat, and protein. To a certain extent, the source of fuel your body uses is dictated by its availability.

In other words, your body tends to use whatever you feed it. Consequently, when acetate levels rise, your body simply burns more acetate, and less fat. In essence, acetate pushes fat to the back of the queue.

So, to summarize and review, here's what happens to fat metabolism after the odd drink or two.

A small portion of the alcohol is converted into fat.

Your liver then converts most of the alcohol into acetate.

The acetate is then released into your bloodstream, and replaces fat as a source of fuel.

Your bodies' response to alcohol is very similar to the way it deals with excess carbohydrate. Although carbohydrate can be converted directly into fat, one of the main effects of overfeeding with carbohydrate is that it simply replaces fat as a source of energy. That's why any type of diet, whether it's high-fat, high-protein, or high-carbohydrate, can lead to a gain in weight.

The bottom line is that even a small amount of alcohol (this study used two servings of vodka and lemonade) can have a big impact on the rate at which your body burns fat — even if the drink is low in calories

i drink just about every week. i try to keep it under 3 drinks. i dont think it hurts much gains wise. i know getting hammered and pissing out 3 gallons of water is a different story. I got hammered last night but im off cycle finally and getting ready for a 6 month cycle so i wont be out much.

Some forms of alcohol contain estrogenic substances. Beer, whiskey, rum, tequila all contain cogeners that not only add to "hangovers", but also impart estrogenic effects on one's system.

As far as weight-loss is a concern, a calorie is a calorie, in my opinion. As long as you get adequate protein and EFA's, calories from snickers or potatos are not going to make a huge difference in your attempts at fat-loss. However, drinking an alcoholic beverage that contains estrogenic substances may cause your system to hold onto unwanted fat. This is the case in my experience with dieting/drinking, but is only based on one individual.

Vodka probably contains the least amount of these rogue substances (cogeners). Generally, the clearer the alcohol the fewer the non-alcoholic components. IE dark wine has more cogeners than white wine, etc. Stay away from beer and whiskey and other dark alcoholic beverages if you want to minimize the anti-androgenic effects of these drinks.

In response to the question, as long as you account for the calories in the vodka that you are drinking, you should not have a problem with drinking/weight loss. Vodka is probably the "safest" dieting alcohol as long as it is mixed with diet "whatever". My suggestion would be to just drink vodka martinis. Vodka and dry vermouth. Tastes good and is mainly pure ethanol. Good for your diet, bad for your liver. What more can you ask for?

latinus - congeners is the word i was thinking of...horrible for you.

sofaguy - good infomation, iguess there really are no drinking "cheats" :bawling:

I went out drinking this weekend. Thursday night I got tanked, but it was worth it b/c I ended up bringing a girl who I have been interested in home with me. I had a good time.

Usually, I stick to Johnnie Walker Black Label on the rocks, but after reading this info, it's going to be Grey Goose on the rocks for me if and when I drink.

I think that the key is moderation. Keep the drinking to a minimum. Also, when I drink, I plan for it in my diet for the day and I try my hardest to make sure that I space out my drinks with a bottle of water in between each one and a lot of water before bed. Then, empty stomach cardio first thing in the morning.

Good Luck.
