Lunar Park (Bret Easton Ellis)
I have read all his other books, this was the last one on the docket. Written quite strangely, to the point that you don't really know what is fact and what is fiction. It's clearly written with Bret as the narrator and the first part of the book discusses his past, which of any of you know him, is very interesting and laced with debauchery and self-hate (thanks to daddy). Then it gets into the typical Ellis type novels, with an odd mix of science fiction, torrid self reflection and love story. I really enjoyed it. His novels are always good for an interesting ride - at times his stories are almost too weird to take seriously and at others you actually feel the fright that he so often discusses. The ending loops the first part of the story (I hate my daddy and it's ruining my new life as a father) back in and addresses it pretty well. Read it.
I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (Tucker Max)
I pretty much NEVER pick up random books and read them. I stick to certain authors or types of authors. But, I had a cross-country flight and no book, so I checked out a book shop in JFK. I'm leafing thru this random book and I look up to see some cutie blonde looking at me. She then jumps in with "Have you read that?". I wish I had said "Obviously not, dumbass", but I was too hungover to have any game. She reco's it and, being the pussy that I am, I say "OKAY, cute blonde!! WHatever you say!!!" and purchase it. It was.,..interesting. And kind of annoying. Synopsis - it's some douche who is probably around 30 or so who apparently started a website when he was in college and ended up writing recaps of all the crazy things that happened to him (basically a blog before there were blogs) - mostly involving tons of booze and chicks. It definitely has some funny ass shit in there, especially to dudes and the college crowd. Lots of stories of him being a sarcastic drunk prick to people and ripping on chicks, then fucking most of them. A lot of the stories are typical to the outgoing male college student, so I imagine only nerds (samoth) and virgins (samoth) would be entertained or suprised by them, but some are certainly over the top. It's a super easy and quick read. Now, the two VERY annoying things about this are as follows. 1) This fucking guy talks about himself more than anybody I have ever seen (puts Lestat to shame). Seems like every two sentences he feels compelled to throw in the obligatory "but I'm Tucker Max" type of sorry bullshit. The way I see it, there are 2 ways to tell a story about yourself; tell the story and let the reader figure out the desired effects ("wow, this guy is a crazy pimp!") or tell the reader directly that "I am a crazy pimp!" in the story. The latter is boring and stanks of insecurity and poor writing skills. 2) Most stories end with him getting laid or chicks throwing themselves at him. Obviously, I'm thinking to myself "Either this guy has mad game or his chicks are average". Judging by his stories, his game is kinda tight (see: he makes fun of chicks until they cry and need his approval and he is not scared to approach any girl) but not that tight. So I go to his website (tuckermax.com). lolol, look at the photos page. There is only ONE chick who is above average (The Bunny) in those pics. Fucking jagoff. It was worth the read based on a few stories that were hilarious, but not worth buying. Makes me think that I could write a book with my life stories and make money.
