Doom 4 Announced

id Software today announced that it has begun production on Doom 4, and is now in the process of expanding its internal team of developers to work on the shooter sequel.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a release.

"It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

The company is currently accepting applications to fill job openings covering roles such as producer, lead designer, and lead animator, among others.

The job listings page indicates that applicable platforms for the positions are PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Though no further details on the game were released, the studio will likely make use of its new id Tech 5 engine for the project.

id Software lead artist Kevin Cloud recently told Shacknews that one of the strengths of the company's new engine is its cross-platform performance.

"You don't even have to worry about how it's going to look on PS3 or 360. Right now we've got it running cross-platform running 60 hertz, and it looks really good," said Cloud. "In terms of what artists are available to achieve--it's something you have to see for yourself. I can say this, but you still won't get it until you see it."

id will be hosting the 13th annual QuakeCon convention on July 31.

I loved the first Duke Nukem, granted, I was in high school.

I have blury and hd dvd drives in my pc.... I have my pc hooked up to my 52 inche samsung 81 series.. I have my ps3 and a stand alone sony bluray player ....
 
Does the Samsung have 1080p native?

hd dvd does not compare to blue ray bro.....not even close

Traz you do releize the graphics on a pc are ten times better already then the ps3 right ? You do know that the gprahics in the ps3 are like 2 6600gt in sli right. The video cards out now singal cards only can blow that ps3 video out of the water no problem
 
I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computer hardware

I know a whole lot of shit when it comes to display solutions, A/V products, televisions, etc.....but not computer hardware

I know alot about anything like that .phones av tvs gaming computer networking .. I spent 1500 on my denon receiver ... hd audio hdmi 1.3 all that shit ... I am kinda addicted to all that stuff

in laymans terms, pc graphics are almost couple of full console generations ahead ie a pc is to the ps3 what the ps3 is to the ps

also i expect taht doom 4 will be released 2 years after they say it will me. id software is almost as bad as blizzard

Doom 3 was a 3d remake of Doom, but it kicked ass for the most part. It was criticized for a couple trivial things like weak-sounding weapons and a flashlight that you couldn't mount on a weapon, meaning you had to put it away and draw a gun whenever you saw an enemy. I'm sure those two issue will be fixed in 4 and make it a very kick ass fps'er.

Bro if they said it's running well cross-platform I doubt even an oc'd 8600gt would have problems running it. Of course, a bigger card is probably needed for higher native res.

i don't even fuck with the PC games anymore. just another thing to distract me and you always have to upgrade your processor or video card.

shit gets way more expensive than a console. plus only certain games are good on PC i feel. like FPS or MMORPG

any true "controller" games are a waste of time imho

Comparing a console to a PC isn't exactly on the same scale though. Could a 7600 GT (which the PS3's RSX is based off of, and slightly faster) pump out a game like MGS 4 on a PC is one question to ask. Console games are designed more specifically to exploit the hardware they'll run on, and they're milked for all they're worth by the end of a console's life cycle. Compare that to an all new PC GPU that's put out pretty much every year, there's no chance to fully take advantage of what the card can do. Console development is far more efficient than that of a PC. Still, both have their own respective advantages.

One only has to read the headings of the first dozen or so reviews of MGS 4 to realize it has raised the bar for what to expect technically from a videogame. Hell even some of the worse reviews admit it's one of if not the most impressive game they've played from a presentation perspective.
