McKEES ROCKS, Pa. — A Pennsylvania councilwoman has accused her borough's lone police dog of racial profiling, leading to calls that the canine be killed.

Dolpho, a 5-year-old German shepherd, can sniff out the difference between marijuana, heroin and cocaine. The dog came from Europe two years ago and is trained in drug detection and patrol.

But councilwoman Wanda Jones Dixon said Dolpho can also tell the difference between blacks and whites, and should be put to sleep.

On Friday, while K-9 officer Schawn Barger wrestled with a drug suspect, he said a quick-release button on his belt was activated, accidentally opening a door to the K-9 wagon.

The dog lunged from the vehicle and bit a 9-year-old boy on the leg instead of the suspect, dragging him for about 20 feet, family members said. The boy is black.

Councilwoman Dixon told the city council she has received six complaints about Dolpho in the past year. Three of the people who complained were involved with drugs. Three others were blacks who believe the dog jumped at or attacked them because of their race.

"I had received complaints from African-Americans saying they believe the dog only attacks African-Americans," councilwoman Dixon said Monday. "I think the dog makes the distinction."

BUT..

i did have a friend when i was a kid.. he had a rottweiler.. the dog was straight up racist.. white people would walk by.. the dog would just lie there.. doing nothing.. not even growl or bark or blink.. but when a black person walked by.. this dog went into attack mode.. ran to the fence, growled like a fucker.. and if it was able to get out.. i don't doubt that it would have attacked them..

Its not so much the dog is racist..... how the hell can a dog be racist? Look at the definition of racist, dogs don't have that capability.

Anyway, it's pretty obvious that dogs raised around white people freak out sometimes when they see black people. Especially in this case, where a dog is in attack mode going after a criminal.

Dogs raised among black people act the same way sometimes when they encounter whites.

During the Apartheid South African Army had dogs especially trained to find blacks hidden. Nothing new excpet that this dog has learned by itself the way to make the difference......

i find in Montreal anyway that most people are distinguished by their parents place of birth not by color of your skin. If your parents are Portuguese, you are Portuguese, if your parents were born in the Dominican your a Dominican, not black. I was born in Italy but came over when i was young so i still consider myself and Italian-Canadian but i prefer being known as Italian cause of the sexual appeal that it gives off.

This is interesting. I remember reading a book of dog trainer's memoirs where a nice vicar in rural England somewhere acquired a german shepherd that did in fact appear to be racist - it would attack black people and this embarrassed the hell outta the not particularly racist, mild-mannered clergyman who was the owner.

No-one knew why. The trainer sorted the problem out in the end by having a black trainer be real nice to the dog for a long time. (no, that's NOT what I mean by "real nice", get your minds outta the gutter).


The books is called "Do dogs need shrinks?" - dog trainers are now called "pet psychologists" but the job is still the same, sorting out problem pets with behavioural problems, usually caused by the owner's misunderstanding of pack behaviour and dynamics. All very interesting, though most problems can be sorted out with a firm voice, some kindness and doggie treats and a rolled-up newspaper. Behavioural psychs would love this line of work.

A good reasonable argument, but in the minds (or lack thereof) of these activists, this is also racist. They are currently arguing that the whole law enforcement industry is racist because the criminal demographics are skewed against minorities. No matter if they are the real perpetrators, if it does not fit in with their perception of how many minorities should be in jail based on population statistics, then it is racist.

I guess they will want Affirmative Action laws to apply for prison systems, -"There are too many blacks and latinos in jail. There needs to be more white people in jail to meet our quota. And throw in some Vietnamese too, they are not being represented enough."

My Rott HATES blacks with a passion and I have no idea why. Got him as a pup and he's never had anything bad done to him by anyone so I don't know what the deal is. One of my black bro's came over to the ouse a few months back and my dog damn near shattered the sliding glass door trying to get at him.
