Does this seem reasonable to you (school issue)

GF just told me her sis got kicked out of her school's nursing program, apparently for giving the wrong meds. To me that seems a little harsh. Years of classes and money basically pissed away over one mistake; one that's a sight more tolerable in the real world no less. I know a handful of people besides myself who've been given the wrong meds by a pharmacist, nothing even happened to them; at least not to that extreme.

I think it's a bullshit ply for the school (it's a CC in GR, MI) to get more money, since apparently she'd have to retake the whole program over. It seems like it's all about money, like if some kid whose parents were on the board or something, you think their kid would have to retake the whole program over for one mistake?

Your thoughts?

*edit* additional info, she was in clinicals and a month away from graduating from the program, and she gave the wrong person Parkinson's meds, as they were supposed to be for the person across the hall. She caught the mistake herself and told her superior and that was that. It's happened to a couple other students in the program, and apparently it's policy at this school. The hospital now won't even accept students from the program anymore. Messed up. She's gonna have to take a serious look at the policy before signing anything.

My ex-gf is a RN and when she was in the program at a CC also, I recall people fucking up all the time and it definetely took more than one screw up to get canned from the whole program. Something doesnt seem right with your case.

Yeah, Id wager this isnt the only thing the girl did wrong.

I work in a hospital and that definitely seems harsh. I know it can be potentially life threatening depending on the nature of the meds, type of screw up etc but still. That's why they're students!! Can she appeal it?

One thing i have learned in life is there are always 2 sides to every story. I would venture you dont have all the facts on the situation....students are expected to make mistake...thats why they are there, to learn. Someone would have to review them before any real meds were handed out so no way it made it that far without at least 2 people messing up. I would also ventur to say that the sister prob has more history of problems than what you know.

I have two possible explanations based purely on speculation.

1. This was the "last straw" after numerous screw ups.

2. She is someone everyone dislikes and they used the first legitimate reason to terminate her.

I used to pick up my ex up from her job, she is an R.N., and the first question I would ask is, "Did you kill anyone today" and she always answered "No" so I responded with..."Then it was a good day." Hospitals are deadly places....Dr's screw up and try to blame their mistakes on Nurses..so on and so forth...
