Does having the A/C on while driving waste gas?

i have sold otherwise good cars b/c the a/c didn't get cold enough for me or the a/c broke.

nawlinz in the summer has temperature and humidity in the mid to high 90's. a/c is needed about 9 months out of the year.

also, i sweat like a some kinda farm aminal.

a/c has been perfected on american and japanese cars since the early 70's. (german, french and itlaian cars, that's a whole 'nother story!!) unless you are a bigger tightwad than even my father EVER was, use it and enjoy it!!!!!!!!

Gas is around $1.40 a gallon
The average person drives 250 miles a week
The average vehicle (what a stupid word, vehicle) gets around 20 mpg.

So you will be buying about 12 gallons a week. If gas mileage is cut by 10% (a giant estimate, i am sure), you would spend an extra $1.50 a week on gas.

this thread could have been just answered with "conservation of energy"

as for what Nordstrum says here - I wholeheartedly agree. I have a friend that will drive around for 15 mins looking for the cheapest gas out there, that is usually about 3 cents difference in price. my car holds 15 gallons, which means he "saved" $.45 by driving around and wasting more gas.

then there was a rental van place that I used once when I moved. there was no gas station anywhere near it, and you had to return it full or else there was a stupid fine (like $25 and then $5 for every gallon of gas after that - they really raped everyone).
so you couldn't drive to the place and then hope there was a place to top it off nearby. so you had to fill up elsewhere, but the trucks waste enough gas that by the time you get to the place, they are no longer full again. so they top it off to ensure nobody else will be able to fill it either and they fine you.

that reminds me of the fine auto my dad/stepmom had for a bit while I was in high school. it was a '77 buick LeSabre. the combination of the exhaust emptying into the cabin, and the heater needing to be on all the time (esp in the summer) due to a faulty radiator - well, that just made it one pleasurable ride.
the other brilliant feature of said vehicle was its incredible lack of power. I'm not sure what was the exact problem, but you could never drive over 30mph in the thing, and when "accelerating" in it... you could easily be passed by elderly women using walkers.
it was baby blue with a scattered assortment of rust and brown primer.

I always drive with my window open, except when the fricking rain comes in, with the A/C on in the summer -- the heater on in the winter. I like to hear what's going on outside. As far as power goes, I don't have to worry about it with a 7.3 L. V-8. I don't consider it wasting gas. I'm using a bit more diesel fuel, but why not have the comfort; and this truck gets almost twice the mileage my previous gasoline-powered truck got with a similar-sized engine.

Amen to that. I actually try to drive without the air conditioner, but can only stand it for maybe about 5 min. The humidity down here is absolutely ridiculous and it makes me sweat like crazy....even just walking from my apt. to my car.

Hot chicks always have to have the AC on. Otherwise your car would overheat.
