Does anyone here know how to pick locks?

Hobby of mine.

I'm just curious if anyone here can pick locks? (ie. deadbolts, doorknobs, padlocks, etc.)

Or am I the only one with this weird hobby?

I used to be very good at picking most locks. It came in handy a few times with my job too. Not sure how good I am anymore though.

i have unlocked the bathroom door with a pointy screw driver thing, because my kid locked himself in

I constructed a homeade pick gun once that worked as well as a locksmith supply model. Cops took it though...:( I need to make another one day as it reduced the need for practice.

I just loved the looks on people's faces when they would watch me open their door in under 30 seconds. Nice fillings you have there!

I usually have my tools and a few practice locks in a drawer by the couch and practice while watching tv.

A locksmith has a tool for doing that in about 30 seconds. The guy who I've seen do it, took 10 seconds and he was in. Big sturdy lock too. I guess if you have the tool you can do it.

Using a paperclip like mcgunther is another story. I wish I had that tool.

I can only get out of handcuffs. All you need is a paper clip.
BTW.. the police aren't nearly as excited as you are when you do this!

Why would the cops take your lock picking tool? Did they assume you were robbing people? I would not accept that. Is it against the law to make something like that?

I used to mess around with lock picking when I was younger. It started when I lost the key to my stash box. So I had to learn. I got really good at most standard tumblers. I used to always be the go-to guy at high school for forgotten masterlock combos as well. Old ones were easy to get open, then they changed the lock mechanism. Now all you need is a flat blade screwdriver and you are good to go. The lock will be destroyed, but it works great.

i have lock-pick instructions on disk which has video footage and a step by step guide for each type of lock...it also has the templates for each special tool so that it can be cut out of spring steel

i tried making a few and had a go, it wasn't as easy as i thought it would be

Yeah, I had a lockaid lock pin gun. They run about 40$ I think. Super simple, different pin attachments. If you watch Sopranos where the FBI bugged Tony Sopranos house, its the same one that they used. Just stick the needle in the lock and squeeze a few times, super simple, and you have a torque tool to hold the tumblers up against the side of the lock. Takes less than a minute on most locks. Just google lockaid lock pick and you'll find lots of places that sell them

I'm still pretty good with manual picks, although I did use a pick gun on more than one occasion during my last job, and I must say that is is much faster than using manual picks.

Actually there's a section in the Criminal Code of Canada specifically related to lockpicking/burglary tools. To even own a tension wrench (L-shaped strip of metal) you NEED a locksmithing licence.

Since the criminal code is based on "intent" I can easilly fight it if I get into trouble, but the cops do actually have the right to confiscate the items should they be found.

Let me put it this way, if I had to choose which to toss out of the car before I got stopped by the cops, my weed, or my lockpicking tools, it would be the lock picking tools.

Yeah been there done that, got some really nice bruises for showing off too!

I've picked a few locks, opened cars, even used a stethoscope to open my buddy's parent's safe one time(took a long time). Now if I really need to open something I drill out the lock, I have some special bits and takes about a minute to drill out a kraton bike lock.
