Does Anybody Know anything about Decks and Thompson Water Seal?

my house has got a huge deck in the backyard. Some of it is treated(that is the green wood right) and some of it isn't. Should I power wash all of it and then put the waterseal on it or just do the untreated? The directions only say spray one coat is that really enough?

Thanks.

Green means that it is like pressure treated with copper arsnide. That just poisons bugs that try to eat it - but it doesn't prevent water damage.

Thompson's essentially raises the amount of water tension that each board has - like waxing your car.

You will still need to do this every now and then - and yeah - do both types of wood.

Is your deck really multiple types of wood? Or do you mean that the walking surface is of one type and that the supports and underlying structure is the pressure treated stuff?

I don't know if it is or not. Some of it has that green tint and some doesn't. Also is one coat really enough to seal it? And it last a year right? Oh btw thanks for the info.

I've never actually sealed a deck - it would obviously depend on the size of the deck as to whether one coat is enough. The container will have the amount to use based on the square footage that you want to spread it over. Figure out how many square feet your deck is and then see how much it says the stuff will cover.
If it says one coat is enough, then I would imagine it is - usually they will tell you to do more coats than you need if anything because they want you to use more of their product.

I used to work in a lumber yard. Also, I misspelled "copper arsenate" above. Technically I think it is "chromated copper arsenate" - hence why there are little "CCA" tags on the wood at the ends... at least there used to be back in 1993-1995 when I was around it.

You might consider using a stain all over the deck so it doesn't have two different colors.
If you do that, be sure to stain before the waterseal.
Once you've watersealed it, the stain won't penetrate.
It's kind of like spraying an oil on it, but lasts longer.

There's two different kinds, one for wood, the other for brick. Get the right kind.
The brick on my house is pourous. I use Thompson's once every fall before winter rains,
keeps the water out of the hairline cracks in the mortor
which then freezes, expands, and gets worse.

Just put it on with a stain/sealer sprayer and everything will be ok, but if you don't want to deal with the maintence/upkeep put in a composite wood deck!

There are much higher rated brands than Thompsons Water Seal.

Ah hell he should go all the way and put down some Polyurethane Coating! lol
