Does 20 + 20 = 40? tanning question

Do you get the same tan if you tan for 2 sessions of 20 minutes each as you would if you tanned for one session of 40 minutes? Or is there a cumulative/exponential melanin-enhancing effect the longer you lie there?

Good one Wilson6. The evidence is pretty good that UV bingeing is worse for your skin than moderation....just like with alcohol. So 20 minutes everyday is less damaging than 40 minutes every second day, or 60 minutes every third day.

Or is it 20 mls of whiskey every day is better than 40mls every second day is better than 60mls every third day???? Naaahhh 60mls of whiskey can't possibly do you any harm :)

LOL! Have you been drinking, MS? I agree - in fact, I'd put 60 mls every day as the LOWER limit for reeally good health.

Now, W6 - about this melanoma thing: what do you do to get a good base tan if not tan???? You can't put Pro-tan on white white skin, can you? Do you use self-tanners, then pro-tan, and no real tan whatsoever?

It's allll in the bulb's.....

If the tanning place/gym does NOT change the bulb's as often as they should, you can lay there all damn day and get NADA!

LOL Spatts, actually it is a Sioux term that means "white boy" but there is more to it than that and I can't think of the English words to describe it...it is kind of a humorous term, basically used when they are making fun of your pale ass.

I think 20+20 DOES equal 40, but I'm not certain. I also can't recall where in the world I heard that - heresay I suppose.

SW - I thought you said where you were competing doesn't allow pro-tan, so you were forced to actually roast your skin & fake bake?

I meant "you" as in the global, everyone, you - didn't W6 say he doesn't compete?

What's a cracker?

Gladiola - the May competition was a no pro-tan deal. The next one is in Australia, and all the usual BB prep. goes. I've already enlisted my Aussie cabinet-maker friend to be my "handler" and "painter". She should be good for "carving in some detail" and a "stain" ROTFL ha ha

Steel,

I'm not saying that you should not use a tanning bed prior to a show, but not year round and/or in excess. Been there done that with the melanoma thing probably as a result of too many years in a tanning bed.

Just be prudent. All the ladies I've worked with use Jan Tana products, only makeup on the face, blend the color with the final skin color.

Try using these products weeks in advance. See what works best for you (i.e., which product, how many applications, how does it hold up when you sweat, etc.). Don't wait for show day to find this stuff out and always go darker than you think you need to. The lighting on good stages are very bright.

Thank you, W6. Will do.

:bigkiss:

Oh, one other thing - I've heard the show colour is a bitch to get off, so if I test it a few weeks out, is there a chance it's going to make me blotchy?

I had shows 2 weeks apart, color at the 2nd one was not near as good, because I still hadn't gotten all the color off from the first one, and I'll be damned if I didn't rub my skin raw every single night trying to get the stuff off. :)

Steelweaver..I work at a tanning salon and beds should emit a constant amout of UV so it shouldn't matter if it was broke up into 2-20 mins sssions BUT I would never suggest to someone to go twice in one day nor to tan for 40 mins (at least not in our beds)..You would definately come out a bit on the crispy side:shocked:

"I'll be damned if I didn't rub my skin raw every single night trying to get the stuff off"

That may have been the problem.

One of the girls at our gym used the foam hair removal some years ago vs shaving. There was some mild burning and peeling and that resulted in a blotchy pattern where the top layer of skin was peeled off.

Ditto with tanning. If the skin burns and it peels, you'll end up with blotches when you apply the dye.

I have to tell you what happened at the Junior Nationals in Philly. One of the men (who actually trains at my gym) doesn't believe in tanning, so he was quite white (rhymes, huh). Anyway, he counted on being able to have someone backstage to put dreamtan on him before pre-judging; unfortunately, they weren't allowing trainers backstage and there weren't enough "preppers" to go around.

When his class was called, this is what we saw: tan guy, tan guy, tan guy, WHITE guy, tan guy. It looked ridiculous - everyone just started laughing. I still can't believe he didn't start dyeing earlier, especially since he didn't have a base tan.

For the evening show, he did put on 4 coats of dreamtan, but even then, he was much lighter than everyone else.

At least you noticed him... maybe that's what he was going for.

Ha ha - poor guy! Well, now he knows!

Doh - of course - thanks W6. And BG, CG :)

OK, last question - Pam or special show oil?
